There is now a reason why FBI director Kash Patel wore a tie with the Premier League winners Liverpool’s insignia on it when he attended a hearing of the US Senate judiciary committee on Tuesday afternoon. After the 45-year-old’s visit in Washington, D.C., a picture of him swiftly went viral on social media.
Patel was there to answer questions about a variety of topics, such as the ongoing investigation into the murder of conservative pundit Charlie Kirk and his firing of long-time staff members who were working on investigations into the Capitol attacks on January 6. When he got into a heated argument with Senators Cory Booker and Adam Schiff, tensions increased.
Even though important issues were being discussed, many people couldn’t help but notice the FBI director’s outfit. Online users criticised him for wearing a tie with a football crest, saying it was “very unprofessional.” View below:
Why FBI Director Was Spotted Wearing Liverpool Tie
The Guardian discovered in their most recent piece that he has been spotted wearing Liverpool ties at least twice before. The first occurred on December 12, 2024, when Patel was reportedly a member of the government and was touring Capitol Hill to meet with several lawmakers following Donald Trump’s election victory.
The second occurred on April 9, 2025, some five months later, during a news conference announcing the seizure of drugs by US police. Patel was confirmed as the FBI’s director by then.
Although the report also implied that “his apparent ownership of multiple Liverpool ties would indicate that his wearing of them is not a fluke,” a social media post made by Patel himself in April demonstrates that he has openly expressed his support for Liverpool, despite some media outlets mistaking him for someone who had kept his admiration to himself. See his post below for what he wrote:
“#YNWA… Champions of the Premier League, Liverpool. Our lucky tie.
Patel’s Football Allegiances Don’t Align With His Political Views

Patel’s political beliefs and the football team he chooses are somewhat at odds. One of the top law enforcement officials in the US, Patel has come to represent a second Trump government that has shaped many facets of American society through authoritarian means.
Liverpool, on the other hand, has historically been linked to left-wing politics and was founded on strong working-class foundations. Its essence was best encapsulated by legendary manager Bill Shankly when he said:
The only way to live and achieve true success, in my opinion, is through teamwork, where everyone works for one another, supports one another, and ultimately shares in the benefits. That may seem like a lot to ask, but that’s how I view both life and football.

Under consecutive Conservative premierships, particularly Margaret Thatcher in the 1970s and 1980s, whose policies shown a near-total disregard for northern England, the city itself was brought to its knees.
Concurrently, the red half of Merseyside fought for decades against the injustices of the Hillsborough tragedy in 1989 and the media’s coverage of it. These battles further highlighted the community’s disenfranchisement from the ruling class, which made them think that Scousers are a different group from the rest of the nation. Whether red or blue, they believe in the power of the people.
