Following Liverpool’s elimination from the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield, supporters believe that Arne Slot made a veiled reference to the club’s owners, FSG.
On penalties, Liverpool was eliminated from the competition after their previous match, which consisted of two legs and a period of extra time, ended with a score of 1-1 on aggregate.
With Ousmane Dembele scoring the game’s lone goal in the 12th minute of the second leg at Anfield, Paris Saint-Germain emerged victorious by a score of 1-0.
During the gunfight, Gianluigi Donnarumma made a save against both Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones, which allowed Liverpool to successfully make their way towards the exit door.
Slot didn’t have a lot of negative things to say about his players’ performance at Anfield, and he believed that they did enough to win. He made this statement after the game.
When asked if Paris Saint-Germain were the favourites to win the competition at this point in time, Slot responded that he did not agree with that assessment and also made reference to the amount of money that the French club has spent.
According to what he said, “I don’t think we deserve to lose this football game today over the course of ninety minutes.” With more than 180 minutes of play, it’s possible that we should have gone into overtime. During the overtime period, I had the impression that Paris Saint-Germain was a little bit better than we were.
“Normally, you face these teams in the semi-final or final, but unfortunately for us we had to face PSG, one of the richest clubs in the world, in this round.”
The owners of Liverpool, Fenway Sports Group, have come under increasing criticism for their lack of spending in recent seasons. These criticisms stem from the fact that Liverpool only brought in two permanent signings during the summer in question.
The only player to be brought in immediately during the summer was Federico Chiesa, who was acquired from Juventus for a fee of £12.5 million. It was a substitute that was not used.
With an initial transfer fee of twenty-five million pounds, Giorgi Mamardashvili was acquired from Valencia. However, he was loaned back to the La Liga club for the entirety of the 2024/25 tournament.
An individual who was a fan of FSG wrote on Twitter, “Love that he called FSG out for being cheap all this time, this is simply quality difference.” This fan was interpreting Slot’s remark as a dig at FSG.
“I’ve been talking about money quite a bit recently, hmmmmmm,” somebody else said.
A third individual stated, “He is sending a message to the owners of Liverpool to spend.”
In addition, a fourth individual added, “So are we, but we don’t spend.”
