Fans have only recently learnt the amount of money that Aston Villa must pay in order to secure the services of Marco Asensio on a permanent basis this summer, and it is a sum that is quite surprising.
During the month of January, Asensio made the move from Paris Saint-Germain to Villa on loan. Since then, the Spaniard has been out of favour under Luis Enrique.
His performance in English football has been impressive so far, as he has scored seven goals from an attacking midfield position in just eight matches.
During the Champions League last 16 match against Club Brugge, the 29-year-old player has already established himself as an important member of the team under the direction of Unai Emery. His three goals scored across both legs of the match helped Villa advance to the quarterfinals of the competition.
They will now face Asensio’s parent club, Paris Saint-Germain, in the round of eight. However, in contrast to English football, where loanees are not permitted to play against their loan club, even in cup competitions, the Spaniard is able to compete against the team that is currently defending their title as champions of Ligue 1.
The fans of Villa are already hopeful that their club will be able to sign Asensio on a permanent basis; however, this may be contingent on whether or not they are able to qualify for Europe in the upcoming season.
As part of his loan agreement with Paris Saint-Germain, the other question is whether or not the club is willing to pay the future fee.
Ben Jacobs of GiveMeSport reports that the two clubs have already begun discussions regarding the future of former Real Madrid midfielder Asensio, with a quoted fee of just £12 million. This is despite the fact that the fee does not appear to be explicitly stated as part of his contract.
Given Asensio’s age, his goal and assist record in three major leagues, and the fact that he is now entering the peak of his powers, that amount would appear to be extremely low for a player of his talent. However, all of these factors are taken into consideration simultaneously.
And fans of Villa are of the same opinion.
A user posted the following on Twitter: “Asensio is an incredible bargain at a price of 12 million pounds.”
A different individual commented: “Monchi [Aston Villa sporting director] is unbelievable.”
“That fee for Asensio is a great deal, to tell you the truth,” said a third user.
And a fourth person said, “I would be content with this on a great many different levels.” Obvious talent, a name that is known all over the world, a wealth of experience to contribute to the team, and a winning mentality.”
