FA chief confirms Thomas Tuchel beat nine candidates to become new England manager

Thomas Tuchel, the former Chelsea manager, has become the third foreign coach to manage England. The FA has awarded him an 18-month contract that will keep him in control until the 2026 World Cup.

The England position was awarded to Thomas Tuchel, who defeated nine other managers, including several domestic candidates, according to FA chief executive Mark Bullingham.

Tuchel, who is 51 years old, has been awarded an 18-month contract that is valued at £5 million annually. He is expected to commence employment in January. The German is the third foreign manager to oversee the England team, and he is faced with the unambiguous but seismic responsibility of winning the 2026 World Cup.

Despite Tuchel’s successful track record at the club level and in the Premier League with Chelsea, the FA’s decision not to appoint an Englishman has incensed a group of disgruntled fans.. However, Bullingham has confirmed that they did evaluate indigenous managers in the process of replacing Gareth Southgate, who resigned in July after eight years of service following the team’s defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

Bullingham responded, “The entire process was confidential,” when asked if any English managers were interviewed, during Tuchel’s unveiling press conference. “We were obligated to preserve that for the benefit of both ourselves and the candidates.” We conducted interviews with approximately ten candidates, including English candidates.

The Newcastle manager, Eddie Howe, and the former Brighton manager, Graham Potter, are two indigenous coaches who were prominently associated with the position.

When asked about the “uncomfortable truth” of appointing a non-Englishman, the FA CEO responded, “We were also very clear that we wanted the very best person for the job. We feel like we owe it to the players and the country to give them that support, leadership in tournaments that will help them get over the line, to give us the best chance of winning a trophy in the men’s World Cup.”

We believe that we have attained that goal. We are overjoyed that Thomas has joined us.

Tuchel, who resided in Surrey with his family from January 2021 to September 2022 while serving as Chelsea’s manager, is eager to persuade any supporters who are opposed to the idea of employing a foreign coach that he is the appropriate candidate. The former manager of Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, and Borussia Dortmund chuckled, “I apologize for my German passport.”

“Perhaps these supporters sensed my enthusiasm for the Premier League and the nation, as well as my affection for the place where I reside and work.” I am optimistic that I will be able to persuade them and demonstrate my pride in serving as the England manager. Yes, I am pleased.

Tuchel was subsequently inquired as to whether he would perform God Save the King. He responded, “I comprehended from Mark that it is a personal decision; there were individuals who sang and others who did not.” I have yet to make a decision.

“Your anthem is deeply moving.” Here at Wembley, I have encountered it during the FA Cup final. In either case, I will demonstrate my appreciation for a deeply affecting anthem.I will consistently demonstrate my admiration for the nation and the new position.

The 51-year-old also underscored the importance of achieving a second star on the “our” uniform by winning the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The fate of England’s final two Nations League group games next month will determine Tuchel’s first games in March, with interim manager Lee Carsley remaining in control.
