Exclusive: Sheffield United player exits are ‘inevitable’ – ‘I spoke to Chris Wilder’

Don Goodman has revealed what Chris Wilder told him regarding Sheffield United’s squad size, as well as his predictions for Tyler Bindon and Louie Barry.

This comes after FLW exclusively reported in November that the South Yorkshire club is prepared to part ways with both players, as well as Ben Godfrey.

Bindon and Barry joined from Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa, respectively, with a lot of promise in the summer under previous manager Rubén Sellés, but their fortunes have changed radically since Wilder’s arrival at Bramall Lane in late September.

What Chris Wilder told Don Goodman may affect the futures of Tyler Bindon and Louie Barry at Sheffield United.

Speaking exclusively to FLW, Goodman described the grim reality that the young couple faces. “It’s a real shame for both Louie Barry and Tyler Bindon, and I do probably feel that it’s inevitable that their loan deals will end, will terminate, in January.”

The reality of their positions becomes increasingly evident when you consider what the Sheffield United boss told the Sky Sports commentator “a few weeks ago.”

Goodman noted, “It’s evident that they don’t really figure in Chris Wilder’s squad or ideas.

“I think when I spoke to Chris Wilder a few weeks ago he was telling me what a massive squad that Sheffield United had and that it really needed trimming.”

In reality, the statistics surrounding the two speak volumes as well. Bindon joined Forest in February after concluding the 24/25 season at Reading, where he was crowned the club’s Player of the Year – so there was a lot of excitement when Sellés signed the New Zealand international.

Bindon, on the other hand, has made only five Blades appearances, four of which occurred in the first few weeks of the season, which Goodman says “didn’t go well.”

“I think Tyler Bindon played the first four or five games, it didn’t go well, and the only football that he’s played since then has been international football for New Zealand.”

The 20-year-old defender did play 45 minutes in Saturday’s 4-0 hammering of Stoke City at Bramall Lane, his first appearance under Wilder.

According to play Insider, Barry has neither scored or assisted in 449 minutes of play and is already back in the West Midlands for treatment on a knee injury, implying that his time in Yorkshire is over.

“And Louie Barry has literally come off the bench on the odd occasion under Chris Wilder, so it is clear that these aren’t two players that Chris Wilder is pinning his hopes on in order to get Sheffield United up the table,” according to Goodman.

Tyler Bindon and Louie Barry may quit Sheffield United “as soon as they can”.

There is already a lot of interest in Barry. According to the BBC, Stoke City are leading the race to sign him on loan, while Derby County and Oxford United are also interested in bringing him away from Bramall Lane.

Notably, Hull City, who previously loaned Barry for the second part of the 2024-25 season, are unlikely to pursue another deal, according to Hull Live.

Bindon’s situation may be more complicated now that he has had the opportunity to impress Wilder on Saturday, but his complete lack of involvement prior to that implies that his return to Forest remains a possibility.

Yes, he gives defensive insurance, but his parent club will not be pleased with Bindon warming the Blades’ bench every week, which is why Goodman concluded, “So, it is probably inevitable that they will leave the club as soon as they can.”

Finally, when the January window opens in just over three weeks, you can anticipate Louie Barry and Tyler Bindon to go their separate ways, as they were never in Wilder’s plans in the first place.
