Femi Seriki was unfortunate to be sent off during a Championship match between Birmingham City and Sheffield United at St Andrews Park.
Keith Hackett, a former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee, told Football Insider exclusively that referee Tim Robinson made a “subjective” decision on the defender’s punishment.
The Blades’ No.38 was awarded a straight red card in the 23rd minute for what is assumed to be a last-man tackle on Ibrahim Osman, but the away fans are strongly disputing it.
Tyler Bindon was right next to the challenge when it occurred on Saturday, March 14. Nonetheless, Robinson adhered to his decision to show a red card, and the Blues scored from the following free kick.
Tim Robinson’s choice about Femi Seriki is very disputed.
On social media, even some Birmingham fans believe that a red card was harsh, and according to a former PGMOL head, the Blades have every right to be furious.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former referee stated: “The foul is the correct decision, but the entire criteria for the Denial of a Goalscoring Opportunity (DOGSO) is not met.”
“The posture of the covering defender eliminated DOSGO. These, of course, are subjective decisions, and the referee may have determined that the covering defender will not challenge.
“Double jeopardy only counts inside the penalty area in cases where a player makes a genuine attempt to play the ball.”
Does Sheffield United have a discipline problem this season?
It appears that United has an issue with discipline.
No team in the Championship has received more red cards than the Blades (6), with their opponents coming closest with five.
While many may disagree with this dismissal, and rightfully so, it will be a larger problem than Chris Wilder wants to admit, and one that must be handled immediately.
Although the Blades have moved out of the relegation zone this season, it was a close call for a spell, and these instances will do little to boost confidence heading into next season.
