A stunning admission that a former Liverpool player intentionally injured an opponent for the aim of gaining personal advantage led to the filing of a lawsuit against the player.
At the beginning of Jurgen Klopp’s tenure as manager of Liverpool, the team competed against Exeter in the FA Cup third round in 2016. The match ended in a tie, with the final score being 2-2. However, Liverpool went on to win the rematch at Anfield by a score of 3-0.
Because there were so many injuries to players on the first team, a large number of younger players were given the chance to demonstrate their skills.
Tom Brewitt, like many other players who came from the academy, was eager to make his debut with the first-team of Liverpool. However, in order to achieve this goal, he resorted to extreme tactics in order to secure his opportunity to play on the main stage.
During an interview on a podcast in the year 2020, Brewitt stated that he had “on purpose” eliminated fellow defender Dan Cleary because he had the impression that only one of them would be selected for the position.
The statement that Brewitt made was that he “absolutely topped” Cleary. Although he emphasised that he was not “incredibly proud” of what he did, he also stated that he did not feel any remorse about it since he believed that it was a choice that was required.
To be honest, he continued, “Dan and I were always on good terms with each other, but I believe that I ended that relationship.” I came to the conclusion that it was either me or him, and I decided to pursue him in the training.
When I was playing in a seven-a-side game, I took a bit of a hard touch, and he came in to tackle me. This happened about a week before the Exeter game.
I waited for a fraction of a second longer than I should have, and as a result, I totally topped him, went over the ball, and made a poor tackle. I was aware that it was a poor tackle, and I did it on purpose. I am not particularly proud of it. To be honest, I don’t feel embarrassed about it either, since in my mind, it was either me or him, and I was going to pick me.
The two is alleged to have gotten into it after the bad challenge, with Cleary ending up on crutches as a result of the altercation. Although Brewitt insisted that he did not want to do harm to his buddy, he stated that he simply “needed him out of the way.”
In addition, he stated, “There was a little bit of a fight that ensued after it, and I believe that he was sent in for his reaction.” The fact that Cleary was upset is not surprising, given that his response was probably spot correct, and I was the one who brought the session to a close. It was kind of like, not mission achieved because I think that’s a bit harsh of me because I didn’t want to damage him, I just needed him out of the way for this game. He was on crutches for the next two weeks, so it was kind of like, not mission done.
If doing so meant wrecking a relationship I was already in, I was willing to go through with it. I was adamant on playing for Liverpool, and it was the only thing I sought to do.
Despite the fact that Brewitt had a concussion, he was not included in the team that played Exeter. Instead, Jose Enrique filled in as a substitute centre defender. The choice did not exactly work out as planned.
In point of fact, Brewitt did not make a single appearance for the club, and after ten years on Merseyside, he transferred to the youth squad of Middlesbrough.
AFC Fylde, Morecambe, Tacoma Defiance, Hartford Athletic, and Swindon Town were among the clubs that he played for in the future until he signed with a third United States club in Orange County.
There was a lawsuit filed against a Liverpool player for attempting to intentionally cause damage.
In the year 2024, it became public knowledge that Cleary was filing a lawsuit against Brewitt and Liverpool for a “loss of a top-level career” as well as career earnings due to injury and depression. Cleary had incorrectly believed that the event had caused his leg to be fractured.
There is no information on the outcome of the lawsuit, which was valued at £200,000; nevertheless, Brewitt and Liverpool both maintained that they were liable.
In addition, Cleary was unable to play for Liverpool and left the club after five years. He went on to play for Birmingham City, Solihull Moors, Dundalk, St. Johnstone, and Shamrock Rovers, his current club.
“There’s being determined and then there’s this,” Cleary stated, breaking his silence on the subject after viewing a video of Brewitt making the assertions. Cleary came to this conclusion after seeing the footage.
When it comes to football, karma always finds a way to come around. When you blow out the candle of another person, it does not make your own candle shine any brighter.
In addition to that, he stated that he was “lucky” to manage to escape with his “leg in one-piece.”
