Diogo Jota, a Liverpool forward, died in a car accident with his brother in Spain. Here’s all we know as the scenario progresses.
The crash occurred near Zamora, northwestern Spain, in the early hours of Thursday morning, according to Spanish news agency EFE.
Jota had three children and married his wife, Rute Cardoso, on June 22.
He played five seasons with Liverpool after joining from rival Premier League team Wolves in 2020.

What do we know about Diogo Jota’s crash?
Jota and his brother, Andre, were driving along the A52 in Zamora when his car went off the road and caught fire.
Witnesses claim that when they called 112, the car was ‘engulfed in flames’, with the fire spreading to neighbouring vegetation.
According to preliminary results, the Lamborghini appeared to suffer a tyre burst while overtaking, leaving the road before catching fire.
According to El Mundo, the automobile was on its way to Benavente when it crashed about 12:40am local time.
What did the authorities say about the vehicle accident?
The Spanish Guardia Civil issued a statement saying that the car involved in the collision appeared to have a tyre burst while overtaking.
They later announced that the two occupants of the car had been identified as Diogo Jota and André Silva.
“What we know so far is that the automobile, a Lamborghini, was involved in a traffic accident and fled the road owing to a tyre blowout while overtaking.
“It happened early in the morning, at 00:30 BST, in Cernadilla, Zamora. The car caught fire, and both occupants were killed.
The emergency services in Castilla and Leon have also issued an official statement, saying that they received many calls about a’vehicle collision’ in the early hours of Thursday morning.
“The 1-1-2 Castilla y Leon operations room received several calls reporting a vehicle accident on Km. 65 of the A-52 in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora.”
“A car was reported to have involved in an accident, and it was on fire.
“1-1-2 contacted the Zamora Traffic Police, the Zamora Provincial Council Fire Brigade, and the Sacyl Emergency Coordination Centre (CCU) about the accident.
“From there, a Medical Emergency Unit (UME) and the Primary Care Medical Staff (MAP) from the Mombuey Health Centre were sent who confirmed the death of two people on the scene.”
What did Liverpool say about Diogo Jota’s death?
Liverpool Football Club released the following statement on Thursday morning: “Liverpool Football Club is grieved by Diogo Jota’s untimely death.
“The club has been notified that the 28-year-old died in a road traffic accident in Spain, together with his brother Andre.
“Liverpool FC will make no further comment at this time and ask that the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates, and club personnel be respected as they try to cope with an incomprehensible tragedy. We will continue to offer them our full support.
Following first reports of Jota’s death, the club removed the home page of their official website, which contained no news headlines and simply an homage to the victims of the Hillsborough and Heysel disasters.

Portuguese FA leads tributes to Diogo Jota.
The Portuguese FA has issued a statement regarding Jota’s death.
They stated that they had requested a minute of quiet from UEFA before Portugal’s Women’s European Championship match against Spain on Thursday evening.
The statement, written by president Pedro Proenca, also reads: “On my behalf, and on behalf of the Portuguese Football Federation, I express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva, as well as Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the clubs where the players, respectively, played.
“The passing of Diogo and Andre Silva represents irreparable losses for Portuguese football, and we will do everything to honour their legacy daily.”
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has also paid homage to the Liverpool forward, writing on Twitter: “That is heartbreaking news for Diogo Jota and his brother.” All my love and best wishes for his family.”

Jota’s old club, FC Porto, issued a statement: “FC Porto is in mourning.”
“We express our profound sympathies to Diogo Jota’s family and friends, as well as his brother Andre Silva, who was also a youth athlete with us. Rest in peace.
Ruben Neves, Jota’s international teammate and former Wolves player, wrote on Instagram: “They say we only lose people when we forget them. I’ll never forget you.
Away from sports, Jota was a huge snooker fan who attended the World Snooker Championship at the Crucible earlier this year.
The World Snooker Tour pays tribute to the Portuguese star: “We are devastated today to learn that Diogo
Jota has unfortunately passed away.

“Diogo liked snooker, so we were delighted to invite him to the Crucible, where he met several of our staff and players.
