When a cursory look at the stats shows that the losing team’s bench cost more than the entire starting eleven that defeated them, the talk normally starts after a giant-killing.

Squad values in the Premier League are skyrocketing. Every year comes with it bloated budgets, bolder expenditure, and larger fees. Even though the 2025–2026 transfer window isn’t quite over, now is the ideal moment to assess the most expensive and packed teams before the new season begins.

The prospects of survival are exposed for clubs that have recently been promoted. Their aspirations are overshadowed by both financial and experience deficits. Champions Liverpool, meanwhile, have one of the most expensive teams in the league, proving that money can occasionally buy success.

Sunderland, Leeds, and Burnley unsurprisingly prop up the rest of the table

It should come as no surprise that the three recently promoted squads support the table. As they get ready to rejoin the Premier League after a two-year hiatus, championship winners Leeds United have a £180 million squad valuation. They consider the Premier League to be their proper home.

Sunderland is far behind with £116 million, which is not surprising considering the Black Cats’ recent entry into League One, while Burnley is just slightly behind with £159 million despite missing out on last season’s second division title on the last day. And given that the most valuable squad in the Premier League is worth ten times more than theirs, that will probably make their struggle to survive the following season much more challenging.

Everton will begin the upcoming season with a new chapter on several fronts: a new stadium, new ownership, their first full season under David Moyes, and a reinvigorated desire to reclaim their former glory. However, a squad worth only £219 million raises doubts about such expectations and implies that there is still much work to be done.

Wolves, on the other hand, are only a hair ahead with a £235 million roster. They are trying to stay competitive in a league that isn’t forgiving by selling off their top players.

Crystal Palace, Fulham, and Nottingham Forest are outperforming their respective squad values.

To argue that Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace, and Fulham all made a name for themselves as entertaining teams to watch in the 2024–2025 campaign wouldn’t be unreasonable at all. Each of their teams has a number of well-known players that the typical fan may recognise right away. However, it turns out that in terms of squad worth, all three are ranked in the bottom half of the leaderboard.

Despite having England internationals Marc Guehi and Eberechi Eze, Palace’s squad is only worth £362 million. They won the FA Cup last season to earn their first major trophy ever. For a large portion of the season, the Tricky Trees appeared to be headed for the Champions League, but a late-season decline forced their £378 million team to settle for Europa Conference League play. In contrast, Fulham’s team costs a relatively low £270 million.

With the likes of Lucas Paqueta, Jarrod Bowen, and Mohammed Kudus on their books, West Ham fans might be surprised to learn that their current side is valued at only £315 million, despite so many great expectations set on them. As for Brentford – who are adjusting to life after the widely loved Thomas Frank left to take the reins at Tottenham – their squad value stands at £368 million, though their future remains worryingly uncertain now that it appears Bryan Mbeumo is also soon to leave the Gtech Community Stadium.

Aston Villa, Newcastle, and Brighton feature

Football is always changing due to the enormous amount of money being invested in it these days; in fact, a single year might seem like a lifetime. In 2009, Bournemouth was in the relegation zone of League Two and on the verge of going out of business. Few could have predicted that, under Andoni Iraola, they would be a well-known Premier League team with a roster valued at little around £400 million, vying for a spot in Europe.

However, many people anticipated that the wealthiest English football team, Newcastle United, would immediately rise to the top of the financial statistics after being acquired by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. However, the Magpies have chosen to grow gradually rather than quickly. At £508 million, their team is now ranked eighth in the Premier League in terms of value; nonetheless, they achieved a significant milestone last season when they defeated Liverpool in the League Cup to win their first trophy in 70 years.

Aston Villa, whose £489 million team has continuously upended the Premier League’s elite under Unai Emery’s astute leadership, is positioned between those two teams. After finishing one spot above the relegation zone, Brighton, who are known for transforming undeveloped talent into polished gems, have amassed a squad worth £623 million, just short of Tottenham’s £686 million. The north Londoners will be hoping for a much more successful league season next time out.

Manchester United’s over £700 million team, which is currently ranked fifth, is definitely not living up to its price tag. Ruben Amorim famously declared his adopted team to be the worst in the club’s history last season; this dire prognosis turned out to be foretelling. After losing to Tottenham in the Europa League final, United fell to their lowest league finish since their relegated 1972–73 season.

Although not nearly on the same scale, Arsenal’s £861 million team is also struggling. Considering their long-term goals, the Gunners continue to fall short. They haven’t taken home a trophy since their secret FA Cup victory in 2020, and their reputation as the Premier League’s recurring bridesmaids—after coming second for the third consecutive season—indicates that they aren’t receiving enough value for their high price tag either.

Just ahead with a team worth £929 million, Liverpool broke the British transfer record by spending £116 million to get Florian Wirtz. While their recent triumph under Arne Slot is still bright, they have decided to fix the roof. The most intimidating aspect, though, is that after only signing one player last season, reports indicate they could still spend up to £200 million more this summer without going over PSR limitations.

Chelsea, whose current team is valued at an incredible £1 billion, was once referred to as the “blue billion-pound bottlejobs” by Gary Neville. However, that doesn’t take away from Manchester City’s shame of wealth. The team coached by Pep Guardiola, which was put together using a brutal trial-and-error process, is valued at £1.15 billion. It’s not surprising that they still dominate domestic football and raise eyebrows among their opponents given the 115 financial scandals that still plague them.
