Days after publicly arguing with fellow analyst Ian Wright, football broadcaster Eni Aluko resigned from a significant position.
Aluko, a former Chelsea and England player, upset supporters recently when she said Wright was preventing female commentators from participating in women’s football.
Even though she later expressed regret, the remarks sparked outrage from fans and Wright himself, who soon after said in a statement that he did not accept Aluko’s apology.
Aluko has now acknowledged in an official statement that she has chosen to leave a significant position for a single reason.
The 38-year-old revealed in a statement that she will no longer be hosting the forthcoming Women’s Football awards.
Instead, the awards ceremony, which is scheduled for May 1 in London, will be hosted by Jamie Carragher and Gabby Logan.
According to Aluko’s remark, “I have a particular place in my heart for the Women’s Football Awards.
“I’m so proud to have been a part of it from the start because it was the first time an event of this size was created specifically to celebrate the incredible achievements in women’s football.”
Nevertheless, I have made the decision to step back from hosting this year.
“I don’t want anything to take away from the happiness, acknowledgment, and celebration that this occasion is meant to bring.
“The players, coaches, supporters, and everyone else who has put in countless hours to improve the women’s game deserve this event.
“I’m confident that Gabby and Jamie, who are both incredibly talented, will bring their enthusiasm and enthusiasm to the stage when hosting the awards.
“I love women’s football deeply, I’m proud of how far we’ve come, and I’ll absolutely be back involved in the future.”
In order to recognize and honor the tremendous expansion of the women’s game in recent years, the Women’s Football Awards were established in 2023.
Players like Ella Toone, Khadija “Bunny” Shaw, and Lauren James are nominated for the player of the year, manager of the year, and lifetime achievement award.
Aluko, however, has decided to step down as host for at least this year’s awards because she believes that her recent spat with Wright may detract from the significance of the ceremony.
