Patrick Agyemang, a Derby County striker, might have missed out on playing in the World Cup this summer.
On Easter Monday, USA international Agyemang departed the pitch on a stretcher, in tears, after appearing to sustain a catastrophic injury.

Agyemang, who hopes to play for the United States in their home World Cup, faced no challenge as he handled the ball on his chest.
In the 40th minute of Derby’s 2-0 victory over Stoke, he looked to land awkwardly and required medical attention.
Finally, he was put onto a stretcher and transported from the field, consoled by his teammates while visibly distraught.
The 25-year-old’s reply may reveal the severity of the ailment, which includes fears about an Achilles condition.
Injury update.
When queried about Agyemang’s injury, Derby manager John Eustace revealed that the player had been taken for a scan.
When asked about the severity of Agyemang’s injury, Eustace replied: “We’ll have to wait and see.”Patrick has gone for a scan, so I can’t really comment till we get the results. Obviously, we don’t want to see any players leave the field on a stretcher, so that’s not ideal.”
When asked if Agyemang had been ruled out of the World Cup, Eustace replied, “Let’s just wait and see. I’m not sure how serious it is yet, so we’ll see once we get the scan findings.”
Meanwhile, Derby teammate Carlton Morris commented: “Huge blow. Pat is obviously extremely important to us. Whatever it is, we are praying for him. “He will have our full backing. And he’s mentally invincible. He will be alright, whatever it is. He’ll attack it head on, with the help of the wonderful medical team here.”
Agyemang’s Nervous Wait

The 2026 World Cup begins in just two months, and Agyemang would have hoped to play up front for the United States.
He appeared in both of his country’s March international break games against Belgium and Portugal.
The former Charlotte FC striker scored against the former, demonstrating his potential effect on the American side.
Agyemang earned a spot in Mauricio Pochettino’s most recent team thanks to his good showing for Derby.
He has 10 goals in his debut season in England after leaving the MLS in the summer, and he has also assisted on four others.
However, if the 14-cap USMNT international sustains an injury, he could be forced to miss the entire tournament.

Agyemang, a Connecticut native, stated in a recent interview that playing for the national team is always a challenging experience. You’re up against a number of top men, and all of them are very talented players. I’m simply focusing on me. I focus on my strengths and work hard. It’s a wonderful sensation just to be in the mix. You just want to keep working hard and pushing yourself in the hopes of being selected.”
Pochettino’s USA are in Group D of the World Cup, along with Paraguay, Australia, and Turkey.
They meet Paraguay in their first game on June 13, with each game played in front of their home crowd.
It’s going to be a memorable summer for America, but missing it due to an injury this late in the season would be tragic for Agyemang.
