Eddie Howe has delivered an update on Kieran Trippier amid reported Coventry City interest in the Newcastle United defender

Coventry City are on the verge of being promoted to the Premier League under Frank Lampard.

The Sky Blues have not fought in the first tier in 25 years, but a win this weekend could be enough to secure their spot in the division, depending on other outcomes.

Middlesbrough and Millwall will enter this weekend 12 points behind in third and fourth place, with only five games remaining, therefore a win at the CBS Arena will secure promotion.

The club will have already begun planning for the forthcoming summer transfer window, with the goal of remaining in the top division next year.

A number of players have already been linked with a move to Lampard’s team ahead of their promotion win.

Coventry have even been linked with signing Kieran Trippier from Newcastle United, following confirmation that he will leave St. James’ Park at the conclusion of the season.

Eddie Howe offers Kieran Trippier an update amid Coventry links.

Howe lauded Trippier’s performance this season, and it has now been announced that he will leave the Magpies when his contract expires this summer.

The Newcastle manager praised the 35-year-old full-back as one of the club’s best players during his tenure, but did not reveal any plans for the future.”Kieran has handled himself superbly during this period,” Howe stated on the club’s official X account.

“He came to see me, and we talked.

“He had a clear idea of what his future will look like.

“We respected that and wanted him to have the best response and reaction throughout his time here.

“In my opinion, he is one of the best players I’ve ever had.

“He has been a model of consistency, and he has the will to win.

“He has been a really good leader, and he deserves to go with all the plaudits.”

Trippier joined Newcastle from Atletico Madrid for an estimated £12 million in the January 2022 transfer window.

The defender helped Howe’s side qualify for the Champions League twice and win the EFL Cup in 2025.

However, his impact on the club has faded this year, with only 18 Premier League appearances thus far in 2025/26.

Trippier’s contract is slated to expire at the end of the season, signaling his departure, leaving him with only seven games to make an impact for the squad.

Newcastle are now 12th in the Premier League table, but they may yet qualify for European competition next season.

Meanwhile, Coventry will face 24th-place Sheffield Wednesday this weekend in the Championship as they aim to secure promotion.

The two teams will face off at the CBS Arena on Saturday at 12.30 p.m.

The Kieran Trippier alternative only makes sense for Coventry as a secondary option.

Trippier will need to be willing to accept a considerable pay reduction for Coventry to consider bringing him in next season.

Premier League experience will be a valuable addition to the squad, but his performances this year demonstrated that he is no longer capable of playing at that level on a consistent basis.

Milan van Ewijk and Kaine Kesler-Hayden are the Sky Blues’ right-back options, though Kesler-Hayden has received little playing time this season.

If Trippier is prepared to come in as a secondary option at a reasonable wage cost, this could be a wise move, with Howe supporting it wholeheartedly.
