DONE DEAL: Sheffield United officially agree to sign talented Dutchman in £0 deal as a free agent

Sheffield United agree to sign free agent Jairo Riedewald.

Sheffield United have agreed to sign Dutch free agent Jairo Riedewald, according to reporter Mike McGrath, who confirmed the story on X.

Following a poor start to the season — one win and eight defeats — the Blades are struggling near the bottom of the table, trailing crisis-hit rivals Sheffield Wednesday. It’s been a forgettable season both on and off the pitch at Bramall Lane, but the return of club legend Chris Wilder provides a ray of hope for a comeback.

With the transfer window closed, Wilder’s only option for bolstering his depleted team is to look to the free agent market. Earlier this week, reports stated that United were interested in Riedewald, who has been without a club since leaving Belgian side Royal Antwerp in the summer.

McGrath has announced that an agreement has been reached, allowing the versatile Dutchman to join the club.

What Riedewald Brings to Blades
Sheffield United’s flaws this season have been well chronicled, with the lack of a real defensive midfielder standing out as a big concern. While Djibril Soumaré has shown promise, the club has failed to replicate the physical presence that Vini Souza previously brought.

The arrival of Riedewald could help to solve that situation. The 27-year-old is a versatile player who can play defensive midfield, centre back, or left back. With experience at Ajax and Crystal Palace, he offers both calm and top-tier pedigree to Wilder’s squad.

His arrival should provide much-needed balance and protection to the Blades’ midfield, as well as aid to steady a backline that has been under intense scrutiny in recent weeks.

Risks of a Mid-Season Free Agent Signing
While Riedewald appears to be a wise investment, there are inherent dangers to signing free players throughout the season.

The Dutchman has apparently been exercising with Sheffield United in recent weeks, allowing the coaching staff to examine his fitness and fit into the group. However, players without a club frequently need time to achieve full match sharpness, thus Riedewald may need a gradual introduction to competitive action.

There is also a chance of injury if he is rushed back too soon, so Wilder will need to exercise caution as he attempts to improve his side ahead of a crucial run of games.

If Riedewald can hit the ground running, his arrival might be a significant assist to Sheffield United’s efforts to turn around their season.
