Didier Drogba Believes Premier League Legend Deserved to Win the Ballon d’Or ‘10 Times’

There aren’t many strikers who are compared to Didier Drogba, and with good cause. During his two periods with the Blues, the Chelsea legend, who retired from football in 2018, won four Premier Leagues, four FA Cups, and three League Cups. His success was astounding.

Most notably, Drogba helped Chelsea win the 2011–12 Champions League, their first Champions League title as a team. The Ivorian scored a late equaliser in regular time, which ultimately forced penalties, and Chelsea defeated Bayern Munich. The forward was a superb target man and a beautiful finisher.

Drogba was renowned for his ability to play on the greatest platforms; he rarely did anything but help his club win a championship. Because of his influence on the game as a player, Drogba’s thoughts are still carefully considered years after he retired. In this instance, his opinions on Thierry Henry were the same.

“He Was Amazing,” “He Was Outstanding,”
Drogba is gushing about the Arsenal legend.

Drogba was asked in a 2024 interview with B/R Football which player should have received a Ballon d’Or but didn’t. Thierry Henry was the first name the former striker mentioned without much doubt. Drogba said:

“Thierry Henry was deserving of the Ballon d’Or.” Ten times over, he deserved it. In my opinion, he excelled both with the national team and in the Premier League. He was outstanding for his squad in the Champions League, scoring goals and winning games by himself. We are discussing Thierry Henry. I’m not sure whether I have anything further to say.

Henry became especially well-known with Arsenal during his illustrious career, which included playing for Monaco, Juventus, and Barcelona. Henry changed from being a winger to an all-out striker under the direction of a certain Arsene Wenger, and as a result, he reached his best form to date.

Henry won three FA Cups and two Premier League crowns when he was in England, but he never received a Ballon d’Or to put in his trophy case. After joining Barcelona from Arsenal in 2007, Henry would go on to win seven awards during his three years there.

During his tenure in north London, the Frenchman, who is considered an Arsenal legend, helped the team win multiple domestic titles and reach the Champions League final. Although Drogba’s views on Henry and his belief that he ought to have received a Ballon d’Or are not unusual, it is not shocking to see the 47-year-old’s name mentioned.

“He Was an Inspiration and an Example.”
For Drogba, Henry was a football icon.

When Drogba received the Football Writers’ Association Tribute award in 2015, he lauded Henry, who had received the honour four years before, in his speech. According to The Metro, Drogba stated:

With all the goals and trophies he won with Arsenal, Barcelona, and France, Henry was the type of player I always aspired to be like. It means a lot to me to have my name next to his because he served as an inspiration and role model for me.

It is safe to assume that both guys had legendary careers now that they are retired. The two are regarded as absolute icons by their respective fan groups and have won multiple awards with their clubs and nations.
