Anthony Gordon has expressed profound remorse for a decision he made during the early stages of his tenure at Newcastle United.
Gordon has emerged as one of, if not the most crucial players for Newcastle this season, demonstrating significant advancements in both his physical condition and performance in the attacking third. However, his initial journey was not without challenges.
During an interview with Craig Hope, Gordon recounted the incident when he declined to communicate with Eddie Howe after being replaced during a match at Brentford last season, expressing his deep remorse for his actions.
Gordon expresses that he experienced a state of extreme distress after disregarding Howe.
The winger’s Newcastle career was still in its early stages after signing from Everton in a £45m move in January 2023. However, things were not going as he had previously anticipated.
Gordon faced challenges in maintaining his physical condition over the initial six months, as Howe has high expectations for his players and the attacker was not accustomed to Everton’s style of play. Consequently, his performance suffered.
Newcastle performed inadequately in the initial half of their match against Brentford, resulting in a 1-0 deficit due to an Ivan Toney penalty. The 22-year-old player was replaced by Matt Ritchie in the 95th minute, most likely to waste time. However, Gordon expressed dissatisfaction with the decision and declined to recognize Howe before going to the bench.
Hope inquired Gordon about the promptness with which he experienced remorse for his decision:
