Fans were left speechless after witnessing what has been referred to as the “worst-ever penalty” scored by Cristiano Ronaldo during Portugal’s match against Denmark in the Nations League.
After Rasmus Hojlund scored a late winner for Denmark in Copenhagen on Thursday, Portugal entered the second leg of their Nations League quarterfinal match 1-0 down. The match was scheduled to take place again on Friday.
Ronaldo’s famous “Sui” celebration was the way the forward for Manchester United celebrated following the goal.
However, Portugal was able to win a penalty kick in the sixth minute of the second leg, which gave them the opportunity to get back on equal footing with the other team.
Ronaldo took control of the situation in an effort to score a record-breaking 136th goal for his country, but he was unable to find the back of the net.
After a lengthy run-up, the 40-year-old player attempted to place his penalty kick into the bottom corner of the net; however, the shot was too central, and custodian Kasper Schmeichel made a comfortable save low to his left.
A fan expressed their disappointment on Twitter by writing, “That’s one of the worst penalty kicks I’ve ever seen from Cristiano Ronaldo.” This was in response to the missed penalty.
An additional individual went even further, stating, “The worst penalty I’ve ever seen from Ronaldo!!! “Wow!”
And a third person enquired, “As one of the top five pen takers of all time, is he going to change up his pen routine?” Do you ever get a chance to see that?
Additionally, fans were able to observe the response of Bruno Fernandes, the captain of Manchester United.
During the time that Ronaldo was running up to take the penalty, Fernandes raised his arms in celebration. He was fully anticipating that Ronaldo, the greatest goalscorer in the history of international football, would convert from 12 yards out.
On the other hand, as soon as he placed both arms behind his head, that feeling quickly transformed into exasperation.
Prior to the start of the game, Ronaldo was presented with a Guinness World Record for the most wins in international football, where he currently holds the record with 132 victories.
Although it appeared that the Portugal icon was pleased to receive the award, it is likely that he would have been even more pleased if his team had won the aggregate match against Denmark in order to advance to the semi-finals of the Nations League.
