Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota, along with his younger brother Andre Silva, died in a vehicle accident during the offseason, and his countrymen, Cristiano Ronaldo, has now made a heartfelt statement about his passing.
Jota, who was born and raised in Porto, died in the early hours of Thursday morning following a deadly vehicle crash. According to BBC Sport, the Lamborghini abandoned the road when a tyre blew out while attempting to overtake another car.
As a result, the vehicle caught fire, and the two young footballers were tragically killed, according to rescue officials. Liverpool issued a statement in the aftermath of the devastating news, requesting that Jota’s family, friends, and those closest to him be given the privacy they deserve during this difficult time.
“Liverpool Football Club is grieved by the untimely death of Diogo Jota. The club has been notified that the 28-year-old died in a road traffic accident in Spain, along with his brother Andre. Liverpool FC will make no further statement at this time and ask that Diogo and Andre’s families, friends, teammates, and club personnel be respected as they try to cope with an incomprehensible tragedy. We will continue to offer them our full support.
Cristiano Ronaldo pays tribute to Diogo Jota.
“I know you will always be with them.”

Along with the Merseysiders, FC Porto, a team for which he played 38 games before transferring to England, Liverpool great Jamie Carragher, and the Portuguese Football Federation have all paid tribute to the life of a brilliant footballer and an even better man.
Ronaldo, too, has responded to the tragic news. Translated into English, the Portugal legend, who played 32 games with the former Atletico Madrid and Porto forward, took to social media to remember the 28-year-old. He wrote:
“It does not make sense.” We were just together on the National Team, and you were married. I express my sympathies to your family, wife, and children, and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you’ll always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and Andre. “We’ll all miss you.”
On Thursday morning, emergency services in Spain received notification of a car collision on the A-52 province in Zamora. They arrived soon at the scene after receiving many calls about the collision, and they later confirmed that Jota and his sibling had died tragically.
“A Medical Emergency Unit (UME) and the Primary Care Medical Staff (MAP) from the Mombuey Health Centre were sent, who confirmed the death of two people on the scene,” it was stated as it became clear what had transpired.
After rising through the youth ranks in his home country, Jota came to England to join Wolverhampton Wanderers following a loan spell at Molineux. He scored 44 goals and provided 19 assists for the Old Gold before grabbing Jurgen Klopp’s notice. He is a one-time Premier League champion, having won the title with Arne Slot in 2024/25.
