Coventry City are likely to complete their second loan deal in 24 hours, with Crystal Palace’s Romain Esse joining another Premier League signing to bolster Frank Lampard’s squad.

For the most part this season, Lampard’s tactical changes have enhanced both offense and defence, resulting in the Sky Blues’ best early points record in years and putting them firmly in contention for promotion. However, continuity from the previous season has also been important to their success.

In that respect, they will not want to disrupt a stable team too much. However, despite their excellent league position, Coventry’s squad depth remains a problem in several areas, with a small group of players performing multiple roles in attack. Injuries have already revealed weak numbers, especially in the wide forward areas, limiting Lampard’s rotation.

Strengthening these areas could help them maintain their promotion drive into the later stages of the season, rather than relying on a core group of starts and wearing them out. Coventry currently lacks specialist wingers and wide forwards beyond Ephron Mason-Clark and Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, resulting in minimal competition and cover when one is unavailable.

The 19-year-old South Korean international had a productive half-season loan with QPR in 2024/25 before joining Portsmouth on loan alongside John Mousinho in the summer. He signed a season-long loan deal that time, but it looks it will be trimmed short with Coventry in mind.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Cov agreed to a loan deal today and is likely to depart Portsmouth to join Lampard’s team on loan. If both transactions are negotiated and sealed in the coming days, it will be the second Premier League winger signed on loan.

According to BBC correspondent Chris Wise, the loan term was cut short yesterday, with Spurs recalling him due to dissatisfaction with his playing time. According to reports, Coventry has offered greater minutes to both the player and his parent club.
