‘Confirmed’ – Man Utd transfer target signs five-year deal after Newcastle United snub

Nicolo Barella, a former transfer target for Newcastle United, has agreed to a new five-year deal.
One year after being strongly linked to a move to Newcastle United, Nicolo Barella has agreed to a new five-year contract with Inter Milan.

Newcastle made inquiries about the midfield player in the hopes of reaching a £50 million agreement last summer. Newcastle moved their focus to AC Milan and Sandro Tonali, but Inter Milan was unwilling to let go of the midfielder.

Since Tonali was suspended for much of the 2023–24 season for breaking betting regulations, the transfer has so far proven to be challenging for both Newcastle and the player. Barella, meanwhile, made 37 appearances to support Inter in their Serie A victory.

The club formally confirmed the 27-year-old’s new long-term contract at the San Siro on Tuesday night as his reward.

The following was stated in a release from the team: “Nicolò Barella, who is a 27-year-old midfielder, has extended his contract with Internazionale Milano. He will play for the Nerazzurri until June 30, 2029.” Manchester United was also keeping an eye on Barella last summer, but a new contract essentially eliminates the player’s possibility of leaving Inter this summer.

Barella is now travelling with the national team as they fly to Germany for Euro 2024 with the goal of defending their championship. Barella won Euro 2020 with Italy.
