Roy Keane showered Cole Palmer with praise after England’s latest abject performance at the Euros.
The Chelsea player’s impressive effort coming off the bench was one of the few bright spots in England’s dreadful goalless stalemate with Slovenia in their last Group C encounter. There is increasing need for Gareth Southgate to take bold risks ahead of Sunday’s semifinal matchup against Slovakia following three mainly awful performances.
Palmer is one of the guys that could be added to the roster. One of the commentators who is requesting that the former Manchester City star be given more playing time is tough taskmaster Keane.
Keane has called Palmer “an amazing player” and praised his “X-factor.” Southgate will be “under huge pressure” to start the current PFA Young Player of the Year, he continued.
After learning of Keane’s remarks following the match, Palmer, a lifelong Manchester United supporter, grinned and said, “It’s always nice to hear, especially from someone like Roy Keane who played internationally and at Manchester United.”
Regarding his likelihood of starting against Slovakia, the 22-year-old stated: “At this point, it’s up to the manager what he wants to do.” I have a lot of faith. I don’t see why I should feel down after this season. I’ll just make an effort to influence things whenever I can.
For the Slovenian match, Southgate made just one alteration to his lineup: he started Conor Gallagher in midfield instead of Trent Alexander-Arnold. The effect of Palmer and fellow substitute Kobbie Mainoo, who replaced Gallagher at halftime, thrilled the Three Lions manager.
According to Southgate, Palmer “showed what he’s been showing in training.” It was our intention to include him and Kobbie in the game. They provide a unique offering.
