Palmer and his Chelsea teammates had an unexpected guest as they celebrated winning the Club World Cup.
Following Chelsea’s victory in the Club World Cup and the ‘gatecrashed’ trophy lift by US President Donald Trump, Cole Palmer wrote a three-word message on Instagram.
At the MetLife Stadium on Sunday night, the Blues upset Paris Saint-Germain, the reigning Champions League champions, 3-0.
In New Jersey, Palmer scored twice, and Joao Pedro gave Chelsea a three-goal lead just before halftime.
Joao Neves was sent off for yanking Marc Cucurella’s hair late in the game, meaning PSG would end up with ten players.
Trump, however, was the center of attention following the game when he gave medals to both teams and gave Blues captain Reece James the Club World Cup trophy.
Despite FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s attempts to eject him, Trump remained on stage throughout the trophy lift and celebrated with the Chelsea team instead of leaving.
Palmer, who appeared perplexed by Trump’s attendance, said in his post-match press conference that he was “a little bit confused” by what the US President did.
Following the Club World Cup final, the Chelsea player shared a picture of himself raising the trophy in the air on Instagram, absent Trump.
“Doubt us now.” was the icy three-word caption that accompanied the post.
Palmer was interviewed pitchside by DAZN in addition to his post-match press conference responsibilities; the network promptly had to issue an apology for the use of foul language.
“It’s a great feeling [to win the trophy],” the England international said after acknowledging that “everyone has talked a lot of s**t about us all season.” Better yet, we were aware that everyone had doubts about us before to the game.
It’s excellent that we put up a fight as we did. Finals are fun for me. It has occurred once more.
“The coach presented a brilliant strategy. He was aware of the location of the space. I only needed to pay him back and score some goals because he worked so hard to free me up.”
According to Palmer, “He is building something special, something important.”
