Despite having struggled to find the back of the goal in a Sheffield United shirt since his arrival at Bramall Lane in January 2025, Tom Cannon appears set to stay with the Blades beyond the forthcoming winter season, despite interest in the forward from elsewhere.
According to Alan Nixon, Sheffield United forward Tom Cannon is expected to stay with the Blades for the rest of the season, with head coach Chris Wilder eager to keep hold of the former Leicester City and Stoke City player.
Indeed, Cannon joined the Blades from Leicester for about £10 million in January, after impressing on loan with Stoke in the first half of the 2024/25 season, scoring nine goals and assisting once in 22 Championship games.
When Wilder arrived at Bramall Lane, he commented, “This is a big statement by the owners and shows the football club’s ambition.”
“He is of a decent age to develop and has this level of experience, both of which are significant. I chatted with Tom during the summer, and he is aware that I am a huge fan of his abilities; I’m thrilled he is a Blade and part of our long-term goal.”
It was believed that the Englishman would be the man to lead the Blades to promotion, but as it turned out, Cannon struggled in a Sheffield United shirt.
Chris Wilder is determined to keep Tom Cannon at Sheffield United despite a difficult time with the Blades.

Cannon would conclude the 2024/25 season with only one goal and one assist in 15 league matches for Sheffield United, as the Blades lost to Sunderland in the play-off final, relegating them to the Championship for another season.
Wilder was fired in the summer and replaced by former Reading and Hull City manager Ruben Selles, who lasted only six games until Wilder returned for his third stint with the club.
Cannon had failed to score under Selles and, until recently, under Wilder, scoring only once in 30 league games for the club before scoring away to local rivals Sheffield Wednesday.
The Everton academy product scored against old club Leicester in the next game, as the Blades began to find form, winning each of their last four games after defeating Stoke 4-0 the previous weekend.
Despite Cannon’s troubles and interest from abroad, Wilder appears to be intent on keeping him until January as the Blades attempt to climb the ladder out from the relegation zone and back into the top six.
Tom Cannon might still play an important role for Sheffield United, who are attempting to save their season under Chris Wilder.

Cannon is expected to continue with Sheffield United for at least the rest of the season as the Blades attempt to salvage their season.
Despite this, the 22-year-old is not a guaranteed starter at Bramall Lane, with Patrick Bamford, Tyrese Campbell, Danny Ings, and Louie Barry all battling for attacking positions.
Though Cannon’s potential is evident, having established himself to be a more than good goalscorer at second-tier level during loans with Preston North End and Stoke, things do not appear to be clicking with the Blades.
Wilder will be trying to get the most out of his £10 million signing sooner rather than later, with the club hoping to put relegation fears behind them and push for the top six by the end of the year.
Cannon is set to play a key role in the Blades’ top-six ambitions this season, whether from the bench or from the start, as he now feels at ease in Sheffield United colors.
