Chris Waddle has released a statement criticizing the EFL over Sheffield Wednesday, calling the situation “embarrassing.”

Sheffield Wednesday veteran Chris Waddle lambasted the English Football League in a recent interview with the Yorkshire Post, as his former team faces a 15-point deduction next season.

The Owls were deducted 18 points at the start of the season due to financial problems caused by former owner Dejphon Chansiri.

Following confirmation of their relegation to League One in late February, Wednesday are now ready to suffer even more agony next season, with the EFL’s insolvency policy proposing a 15-point deduction if Arise Capital Partners’ proposed acquisition fails.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Post, Waddle chastised the EFL for punishing the club and its fans for Chansiri’s misdeeds, as well as the lack of uniformity in punishments, using Chelsea’s actions as an example.

He said, “It is shocking. We understand the rules, but taking another 15 off them is ludicrous. They have received their sentence, and they have been relegated. Allow someone to come in and challenge the club and propel it forward. And why are they being punished like this again? “It’s truly pathetic.”Chelsea stole their way to trophies and received a £10 million fine; why are they not receiving a 15-point deduction? No insult to Chelsea; it isn’t a lot of money for them, thus they haven’t been punished and stripped of titles or trophies. We’re still waiting for the Manchester City one, which I believe will come out in about 50 years.”

Chris Waddle’s EFL criticism is “absolutely correct” amid the proposed Sheffield Wednesday points deduction.

Following the former Owl’s severe appraisal of the Hillsborough tragedy, Football League World asked Patrick McKenna, their resident Sheffield Wednesday expert, if he agreed with Waddle’s criticism of the EFL.

Patrick had this to say: “With regard to Chris Waddle’s comments regarding his criticism of the EFL, he is absolutely correct.””It’s shocking that they are seeking to hammer us further for the indiscretions of Dejphon Chansiri, the same Chansiri they let walk through their so-called checks and did absolutely nothing to stop him decimating our football club.””It’s embarrassing that they’re trying to take this hard line.”The EFL’s claim of a non-negotiable 15-point deduction contradicts a document provided by our supporters trust, which shows the reverse.Sheffield Wednesday have already been punished severely under Chansiri. After several embargoes, points deductions, and relegation, the club has become a shell of its former self. The proposed points deduction by new owners could lead to a relegation struggle in the upcoming season. The EFL understands that this diminishes the club’s value and increases the possibility of other creditors receiving less since they want any possible owners to give Chansiri £15 million,” Patrick concluded.

As Patrick pointed out, the tangible resentment surrounding Wednesday is very natural, as Chansiri was allowed to run the club into the ground, and now the fans are being punished for one man’s irresponsible behavior.

Chris Waddle’s Chelsea argument “not a great comparison”

In his interview with the Yorkshire Post, Waddle took aim at both Chelsea and Manchester City, who breached financial rules over many years and went on to enjoy great success while receiving considerably lenient fines.

While the conclusion of Man City’s violations is still unknown, Chelsea received a £10.75 million fine, the highest ever imposed by the Premier League, and a one-year suspended transfer ban, which Waddle saw as a little slap on the wrist in comparison to what Sheffield Wednesday could face next season.

When Patrick was contacted about these statements, he wasn’t entirely convinced by the 65-year-old’s comparison, but he did express his dissatisfaction with the London club’s lack of meaningful discipline.

Patrick responded: “Regarding Chelsea — it is sickening to see clubs like Chelsea waltz away with no punishment, but no doubt it’s a different governing body handing out that punishment, so it’s not a great comparison.”It’s difficult to take when Wednesday fans see clubs like Chelsea get away with it after we’ve been through so much.
