Birmingham City manager Chris Davies has given some good news on the injury front: Jay Stansfield may be able to return to action against Swansea City this Saturday.
According to Birmingham Live, Stansfield has been “getting better” after missing the Blues’ 3-2 FA Cup triumph against Cambridge United the previous weekend.
Stansfield has been an important member of Chris Davies’ team this season, starting 24 of Birmingham’s 26 league games since their return to the Championship and scored a team-high eight goals.
However, it was revealed following his absence from the Cambridge game that the striker had been coping with a knock sustained during the Christmas period, which took him out of an otherwise full-strength squad against the League Two outfit last Saturday.
Fortunately for Chris Davies, the injury appears to be healing quickly, and his star player could return to action as soon as this weekend.
Chris Davies Issues Jay Stansfield Injury Update

Chris Davies detailed his injury news ahead of a trip to South Wales at his press conference, and Birmingham Live reported that it was positive news for Stansfield.
The Blues manager revealed that the 23-year-old player had been battling with a knock for a few weeks. Despite playing a full 90 minutes in the 3-2 win against Coventry City at the end of the rigorous New Year calendar, he was unable to participate in the cup fixture.Jay took a knock a few weeks ago and has been keeping on with it. “He performed admirably in the Coventry match,” he stated last weekend. It’s a knock, and we hope he had a wonderful week and is fine. It will not be long-term, but it is a setback that he has had to deal with.”
According to sources, the striker may return this weekend after having a successful week. He’s clearly improving, so there’s a high chance he’ll be back involved. “We’ll see how the next day goes,” Davies stated at his pre-Swansea press conference.
Stansfield’s return would be appreciated more than ever, even if his substitute on Saturday, Kyogo Furuhashi, scored the second goal in the cup victory.
Birmingham is now short-handed in the offensive areas due to Demarai Gray’s injury and the exits of Lyndon Dykes and Keshi Anderson this week, so the Blues are desperate for an attacking boost.
Jay Stansfield’s news has come at the right time for Birmingham City.

Given that Stansfield’s initial prognosis indicated that he would not be away indefinitely, missing this weekend’s game would not have raised many red flags.
However, given the present availability crisis at St Andrew’s, the potential return of Birmingham’s record signing is excellent news ahead of a difficult away trip.
So far this season, the Blues have had a dismal away record, with only Sheffield Wednesday scoring fewer points per game than Chris Davies’ side. Swansea have won their previous four Championship home games under Vitor Matos, conceding only once.
Birmingham has to build on their massive triumph over league leaders Coventry a fortnight ago, but without their talisman, it would have been a difficult challenge against the stubborn Swans.
If Stansfield can play any part in this Saturday’s trip to South Wales, Chris Davies’ side will have more confidence. After all, Birmingham have lost the two Championship games in which he has not appeared this season without scoring.
Blues fans will now travel down, hoping that the 23-year-old has passed the fitness test by Saturday teatime.
