Birmingham City head coach Chris Davies has hinted at a lifeline for Liverpool loanee Lewis Koumas, who scored his first goals for the Blues in their most recent 3-2 victory over Coventry City, and could be given the nod on a more regular basis following Demarai Gray’s injury.
Birmingham City hasn’t had the season they hoped for after setting an EFL record with 111 points in League One previous season.
Many expected the Blues to be in the top six for the most of the season, but their record has been spotty at best.
Prior to their Coventry triumph, head coach Chris Davies was under intense pressure to start producing wins sooner rather than later, and while this most recent result has bought him some time, his position is far from secure.
Lewis Koumas, a Liverpool loanee, started against Coventry for only the fifth time this season, and he made advantage of the opportunity, scoring the second goal to give Birmingham a 2-1 lead.
With Demarai Gray out until at least February, head coach Davies has hinted that Koumas may be given more of a chance in the side as a result of Gray’s injury, which could pay off in the future.
Chris Davies suggests a Birmingham City resurrection for Liverpool loanee Lewis Koumas.

After scoring his first goal in the Championship in over a year since his loan spell at Stoke City, and his first in Birmingham royal blue, head coach Davies has hinted that Koumas could play a larger part for the club in the coming weeks and months.
It was originally thought that the 20-year-old forward would return to Liverpool this winter due to a lack of game time, but with Gray now out injured, the club is short of forwards.
Scott Wright returned to Birmingham’s squad for the first time since February in their win against Coventry, while Keshi Anderson has battled for consistency in the second tier this season.
Davies commented on Koumas’ first goal for the club, saying, “With Lewis, I was speaking to him about needing that moment. “He needed that goal to ignite the club’s performance.””To be fair to him, he hadn’t had many chances to do so because he’d been out of the team and only coming on for little bits, but to play, start, and score in a game like that was a big moment.”I spoke with Lewis, and he was really delighted with the day, his best day for us, so it’s a question of, ‘OK, let’s go on and get ready for the next match.'”
With the busy festive season past, Birmingham’s match list, like that of every other Championship side, becomes more stable, and Koumas appears to have a decent chance of playing against Cambridge United, Swansea City, Sheffield Wednesday, and former club Stoke.
Davis would add, “We’ll have an open mind about it, as Lewis would, and see how it develops through January. He’s got to be sure that he’s receiving the playing time and opportunity he needs here, just as Liverpool has, and we’ve got to be extremely pleased with Lewis and everything else.”
While there is no guarantee that he will stay at the club after January, his goal against Coventry has done a lot to put him back in Davies’ thoughts moving forward, and if he can capitalise on being given a run in the side, Koumas’ season is only going to get better.
Despite recent dismal form, Birmingham City will still aim for a spot in the top six, with Lewis Koumas expected to play a significant role in those objectives.

Birmingham is currently seven points behind sixth-place Watford and seventh-place Hull City, both of which have one game in hand.
Many Birmingham fans’ hopes for their return to the second tier were sky-high after a record-breaking season last time around, but it hasn’t been the case thus far.
Ipswich Town completed back-to-back promotions from League One to the Premier League just a few seasons ago, so a similar accomplishment for Birmingham should not be ruled out, considering that they were in arguably a stronger position than Ipswich.
Though the season is far from over, and given the unpredictable nature of the Championship, one solid run of form might propel the Blues back up the table and into the play-off picture.
What role Koumas will play in that remains to be seen, but his situation at St Andrews now appears more promising than it did a few weeks ago, and if he takes advantage of Gray’s injury, what’s stopping him from permanently replacing the former Leicester City winger in the side?
