Chelsea Re-Sign Ishe Samuels-Smith 33 Days After Selling Him – Here’s Why

Chelsea have caused a stir once more this summer, just when it appeared they could escape criticism for burning further holes in their coffers under Todd Boehly’s devil-may-care transfer strategy. While they managed to stay in the black in terms of net spend, the club has received criticism on social media from football fans for re-signing a player they sold only 33 days before.

In July, Enzo Maresca’s team agreed to sell 19-year-old defender Ishe Samuels-Smith to sister club Strasbourg for about £6.5 million, with the youngster signing a five-year term. That appeared to be the end of his Chelsea career, two years after signing from Everton with no senior appearances to his name.

However, in a surprise move, Samuels-Smith rejoined the Premier League side barely a month later, only to be loaned out to Swansea City for the 2025/26 season.

According to BBC writer Nizaar Kinsella, Chelsea re-signed Samuels-Smith for a variety of reasons (listed below). For starters, Ismael Doukoure’s choice to devote his future to Strasbourg is likely to limit his playing time, as the teenager will also face heavy competition from Ben Chilwell, who has recently joined them.

Samuels-Smith is also seen as a “important” player by BlueCo, therefore the decision to bring him back and agree on a Championship loan was judged the greatest choice for his development.

This is comparable to the example of Tyler Dibling, who Chelsea permitted to return to Southampton due to homesickness, with the club effectively refunding the fee paid in 2022. BlueCo made a clever move by incorporating a buy-back clause into the transaction that sent Samuels-Smith to Strasbourg, making his return to west London a reasonably simple process.

Naturally, opposing fans have questioned the integrity of multi-team ownership systems, particularly after it was claimed on social media earlier this week that Brighton midfielder Julio Enciso had joined the BlueCo group without mentioning any individual club. All of this occurred when Crystal Palace was kicked out of the Europa League for their loose ties to John Textor, leaving football’s financial web as convoluted and unclear as ever.
