Chelsea Fans Make Their Minds Up on Liam Delap After First Chelsea Club World Cup Start

Following Liam Delap’s first start for Chelsea in their Club World Cup loss to Brazilian powerhouse Flamengo, Chelsea supporters were ready to express their opinions about the former Ipswich Town player on social media. During his first appearance in the victory over LAFC earlier this week, Delap made an impression and even assisted Enzo Fernandez’s close-range goal.

In a much more competitive match than the Blues’ tournament opener, Enzo Maresca gave him a starting spot in recognition of his achievements. Supporters also responded quickly to what they seen from the rising English talent.

Delap Shines Despite Chelsea’s Woes

The striker continued to show potential despite the result

In terms of statistics, Delap’s performance in Philadelphia seemed to fall far short of expectations. The striker only had one shot on goal and had another attempt stopped, both of which were considered wasted opportunities. In addition, he only completed six of his nine passes, had only 15 touches on the ball, and lost possession five times.

The Englishman’s performance in duels and take-ons also didn’t improve; he lost four of his five duels and only managed one dribble before being replaced in the 64th minute by Nicolas Jackson, who was sent off four minutes after entering the game.

Nevertheless, Chelsea supporters continued to commend him online despite his disappointing on-field performance, primarily for his demeanour during the game.

“Loved this game so far, fiery, Delap feels really right feels like he fits the club to me, so funny people saying the players don’t care about this cup when you’ve watched this tournament so far,” wrote a supporter on X, while another added: “If you don’t see it with Delap I don’t know what to tell you.”

“Liam Delap’s hold-up play, pace + power, s***housery,” a third person remarked. He shouts “Chelsea striker,” and a fourth said: “Enough to see. Here, Delap will be successful.
