Chelsea’s 1-0 victory over Tottenham in their London derby marked a successful return to Premier League action. Both teams had goals disallowed, but Enzo Fernandez’s header in the second half was sufficient to guarantee all three points.
The Blues had to wait more than two weeks to bounce back after their lacklustre showing against Arsenal the previous time out, but tonight’s victory improved their chances of finishing in the top four. Ange Postecoglou’s team, meanwhile, was hoping for their first domestic win since February 22. They had gone four games without a goal in six games in all competitions, and their problems in front of goal were still present.
Even though the home team managed to win all three points, two players in particular received a lot of flak for their inconsequential role in the game.
Jadon Sancho and Pedro Neto Struggle Against Tottenham
The pair started on either flank but failed to impress
Pedro Neto and Jadon Sancho, who haven’t done anything recently to merit the opportunity, kept their spots on either flank when Cole Palmer returned to the Blues in the number 10 position. But with little compensation, Maresca continued to work with the two earning £260,000 every week.
The Englishman’s performance was somewhat better than his dismal performances against Arsenal, which sparked speculation that Chelsea would send him back to Manchester United. In the first half, the 25-year-old did force Guglielmo Vicario to make a great save that would have given the home team the lead much sooner. In spite of it, it remained mostly unchanged. Sancho didn’t take on a defender at any time during the evening and only made one crucial pass. Before being replaced by Noni Madueke in the 68th minute, he lost possession nine times and only won one of his seven duels.
His Portuguese partner did not fare much better. Neto was hugging the touchline and staying out of the game for a lot of the time. When he did, he frequently wasted things and lost them eleven times. In addition to failing to finish any dribbles like the player on the other side of the field, he was unable to register a shot on goal. Chelsea supporters are therefore starting to lose patience with him and Sancho.
Chelsea Fans Slam Neto and Sancho
Throughout the 90 minutes, Chelsea supporters took to social media to express their frustrations with their two wide men, which had already been expressed earlier in the season.
“It’s hilarious how important wingers are to Maresca’s system & we gave him Sancho & Neto,” said one before adding “It’s painful watching these guys.” Another claimed that “Neto and Sancho are the reason we underperform in the opposition box,” following Enzo Maresca’s admission that he wished to see the Englishman in question shoot more frequently.
Regarding the two players’ finishing, a third person added, “Caicedo shoots better than Jadon Sancho and Pedro Neto.” Another, meantime, expressed dissatisfaction with their positional play by posing the question, “Why is Neto holding the width? One fifth said that “Neto and Sancho have the worst IQ,” while another said that “he’s somehow more useless than Sancho in this game.”
One additional fan summed up the majority’s sentiments with the simple statement, “Neto and Sancho are just not good enough.”
