Caoimhin Kelleher, the custodian for Liverpool, has revealed that he still wants to leave the club, even though they turned down several offers for him this summer.
Kelleher, who is 25 years old, has been Alisson Becker’s backup for the past few seasons. He played in 26 games across all categories last season while Becker was hurt. But when Jurgen Klopp left Anfield as boss after a long time in May, Kelleher was eager to follow.
After the transfer market closed on 30 August, the Irish custodian was linked with Brighton, Wolves and Nottingham Forest. He wants to play every week. At one point, his chances of leaving the club went up because Liverpool started talks to sign Giorgi Mamardashvili, a custodian from Georgia, from Valencia for £25 million.
But Arne Slot, the new manager of Liverpool, decided to move Mamardashvili back to Valencia for the rest of the season. This meant that the Reds could keep Kelleher. The 25-year-old played in Saturday’s 2-0 loss to England for the Republic of Ireland. He has now talked about his unclear future and said that he still wants to leave Merseyside.
For the past few years, Kelleher has made it clear that he wants to become a No. 1 and play every week. “The baseball team chose to get a new custodian.” As seen from the outside, it looks like they have decided to go in a different way.
“Over the last few seasons, it’s been clear to me that I want to be a No. 1 player and play every week.” From the outside, it looks like I make all the decisions sometimes, but I don’t always have control over them.
The Reds’ No. 2 player is under contract until 2026, so next summer is probably their last chance to get a good price for him. It was said that Forest made an offer at the end of last month, but it was less than what Liverpool wanted.
After that, Slot made it clear that he wanted Kelleher to be on his team for his first season as manager. He said, “Maybe [he has to think of himself], but we have to make decisions too.” It’s not just the player. You need a lot of good players and competition when you work at a club like Liverpool.
“Like I said, Mamardashvili is someone for the long-term future of the club and I’m really, really happy with the goalkeepers we have at the moment.”
On September 25, Liverpool will host West Ham in the Carabao Cup. This is set to be Kelleher’s first game of the season.
