Galatasaray slammed Liverpool with a viral tweet following their unexpected 1-0 victory over the Premier League champions on Tuesday night. A dubious first-half penalty was all the Turkish giants – one of football’s most decorated clubs – needed to clinch their first victory over English opponents since beating Manchester United in October 2012.
On another night, Arne Slot’s team may have been humiliated considerably worse, as they appeared fragmented and lethargic throughout the game. Alisson was once again a hero, making numerous key saves, but after suffering an injury, he was forced to give way to Giorgi Mamardashvili in the second half.
Liverpool must now focus on the big picture ahead of their trip to Chelsea this weekend: they are still top of the Premier League, have won seven of nine games in all competitions, and have plenty of time to gel as a team. To make matters worse, Galatasaray made a disparaging social media post.

Galatasaray’s English Twitter account was eager to add salt to the wounds of Liverpool fans who believed they had just witnessed their team’s worst performance since their new manager succeeded Jurgen Klopp last summer. Following full-time, the club wrote (see the complete post below):
“You’ll never walk alone, but sometimes you walk out without points.”
Galatasaray showed plenty of grace before the match, revealing tifos and banners in honour to Diogo Jota, as well as political messages in favour of Palestine. However, once the whistle came, Okan Buruk’s side demonstrated as much tenacity as any team Liverpool will face this season, embracing a mentality of winning at all costs.

The Reds should have expected derision after losing to a team that had not won in their previous seven Champions League games. Still, Galatasaray had spent much of the summer preparing to be the underdog in this year’s competition.
Like Liverpool, they were among the biggest spenders, breaking the Turkish transfer record by signing former Napoli striker Victor Osimhen. He was signed permanently for £65.5 million and stepped up to convert the penalty that led Slot’s team to defeat in midweek.
