After Manchester United’s resounding victory against Leicester City on Sunday night, Bruno Fernandes responded elegantly when questioned about Roy Keane’s recent criticism of him. The Red Devils won 3-0 at the King Power Stadium thanks to a goal and an assist from the Portuguese midfielder, who was once again at the top of his game.
Even though Fernandes has been United’s best player by a considerable margin this season, he has failed to win over everyone and has been constantly criticised by United great Keane.
Keane dubbed the players at Man United a group of ‘imposters’ in a furious tirade at the end of February. Additionally, he singled out Fernandes for criticism, raising concerns about his leadership abilities and on-field conduct. On the Overlap, he stated:
“We didn’t anticipate him to be the captain. Going back to the team, the players, and their recruitment, you can see that they are playing with a little bit of speed, quality, and fight. At Everton, they draw. They seem to have won the cup. Even the crowd are singing for Bruno when I see them during games. I believe you guys are imposters based on what I see.
“On Saturday, I went to watch them at Everton. People act as though they are shutting down others. He’s saving them and he’s 15th in the league. Give thanks to the Lord. Talent is insufficient. Bruno is a talented player, but talent alone is insufficient, Wrighty. You keep bringing up the subject of talent. Is anyone going with me, guys? You want someone who’s going? Talent is insufficient! Players must examine the image of themselves in the mirror.
"Talent's not enough to play for a big club!" 😡

When asked if criticism hurts or inspires him after the Leicester game, Fernandes answered bluntly to Keane’s criticism, stating that it’s “not nice” but that it does inspire him to perform even better. On Sky Sports, he stated:
“No one like hearing negative things about you, thus it is not pleasant. However, it also inspires you and forces you to consider many of the things that others believe you need to work on. You must take it positively, recognising that no matter what people say, there is always room for improvement.
“I am aware that you are referring to Roy Keane, of course. As already stated, Roy Keane is someone I greatly like. He was a fantastic player for the team and, in my opinion, one of the greatest captains the team has ever had. I have to respect the way he thinks and the perception he has of me as a player and captain. I go about things my own way in an effort to be the greatest teammate and person I can be—not the captain.
“I try to set an example for everything I do in training, on the pitch, and in everything I do, but I understand that not everyone will agree with me or think the same way, and I respect everyone’s viewpoint.
“And as I have said, I have huge respect for Roy Keane and I accept that there are a lot of margins for improvement in my game, in my leadership, in everything I do, even in my own life.”

Many United supporters have praised Fernandes for his mature answer, which has been well received by the team. He was said to as a “pure class act” by one, while Keane was urged to apologise by another. His remark was referred to as “captain-esc” by another United fan, and they “wouldn’t want anyone else leading us every week.”
