Bruno Fernandes Penalty: Keith Hackett Criticises Fulham vs Man Utd Referee

Keith Hackett, the former PGMOL chairman, has issued a scathing assessment on referee Chris Kavanagh’s part in the buildup to Bruno Fernandes’ failed penalty against Fulham on Sunday afternoon. Manchester United were given a wonderful opportunity to break the deadlock in the 36th minute when a VAR review determined that Calvin Bassey had wrestled Mason Mount to the ground, forcing Kavanagh to signal to the spot.

However, the Red Devils’ skipper was unable to capitalize, as his sluggish run-up resulted in the ball flying high into the seats. Amorim’s team eventually took the lead after the break thanks to a Rodrigo Muniz own goal, only for Emile Smith Rowe to equalise, leaving United disappointed with their squandered opportunities and facing a second consecutive winless start to the Premier League season.

Fernandes, on the other hand, later claimed he was put off by the referee, with additional film suggesting Kavanagh appeared to contact with him moments before proceeding with his customary penalty-taking routine. Hackett has finally addressed the incident.

Ex-PGMOL Chief Delivers Verdict on Fernandes Penalty Controversy

Gary Neville, co-commentating live on Sky Sports Main Event, suggested that the referee was to blame for Fernandes’ mistake, citing footage of Kavanagh pushing into the taker as he made his way to the edge of the box. The event upset United’s captain, who challenged Kavanagh momentarily before stepping forward, only to lose his train of thought in a high-pressure situation.

In an exclusive interview with Football Insider, former FIFA referee Hackett reiterated Neville’s point of view, arguing that the official had no reason for getting involved. He stated (see the video below): “There was simply no cause for Kavanagh to make physical contact with Fernandes during the penalty kick.

“It’s simply poor technique on his part. He should position the ball accurately on the penalty mark, the goalie correctly on the goal line, and attackers and defenders outside the penalty area.

“He then assumes his position and signals for the kick to be executed. Never allow a player to use the referee as an excuse for missing a shot on goal.

Fernandes could be seen having a serious talk with Kavanagh, allegedly concerning his penalty antics, even after the first half ended and the second half began. “It upset me because the referee didn’t apologise,” the 30-year-old remarked in his post-match interview.

“Obviously, like any penalty taker, you have your own routine,” he went on, “but that is no justification for missing the penalty. I just had a terrible hit on the ball. I got my foot too far beneath the ball, which is why the ball went over the bar.”
