BREAKING: The true reason a fan was restrained by security after a major brawl occurred at the end of a Championship match has now been revealed.

Security had to hold back a Stoke City fan after their late defeat to Hull City.

Sorba Thomas put Stoke ahead after 17 minutes, but Semi Ajayi equalized for the visitors shortly later.

Joe Gelhardt, on loan from Leeds United, then secured all three points for Hull with a clinical finish in the 90th minute, making it 2-1.

When referee Josh Smith blew his whistle at full-time, tempers exploded between the two teams.

John Lundstram appeared to provoke some Stoke fans behind one of the goals by shushing them.

Ashley Phillips of the Potters then pushed him away, prompting Gelhardt and teammate Kyle Joseph to intervene.

Television cameras then show a security official pulling back a Stoke fan who had momentarily entered the pitch before being relocated behind the advertising hoardings.

Other spectators can be seen shouting and waving at the Hull players, and objects are also hurled.

Mohamed Belloumi held his hands up to try to calm them down.

As the tension eased, both groups of players dispersed and moved away from the stand.

What did the management say?

Following the game, Stoke manager Mark Robins said: “It is what it is. That will be resolved by the referee.”

Hull manager Sergej Jakirovic continued, “I was with their gaffer, and then we tried to calm the situation with the players.”

“But it’s part of football. Even for me, this is typical.

“You are angry when you lose the game, you are happy when you win the game.”

Before Joseph and Lundstram could leave the pitch, referee Smith issued them yellow cards.

Stoke’s defeat was their third in four games, and they failed to close the gap on leaders Coventry City.

Hull, on the other side, moved closer to the Championship play-offs with their eighth victory of the season.
