Vlachodimos: Borson reveals the true cause of Newcastle’s surprising five-year agreement
Odysseas Vlachodimos has probably been given a five-year deal by Newcastle United in order to spread out the amortization of his transfer cost over a longer time frame.
That’s the opinion of financial analyst Stefan Borson, who exclusively revealed to Football Insider that, following the Greece international’s summer transfer from Nottingham Forest to the northeast powerhouses, there are “red flags” surrounding the deal.
The 30-year-old goalkeeper was signed by Newcastle for an estimated £20 million, hours before the 2023–24 accounting deadline on June 30. The same day, midfielder Elliot Anderson went to the City Ground for a reported £35 million.
Last season, both Premier League teams were on the verge of exceeding the profit and sustainability (PSR) cap, which would have resulted in a deduction of points.
Newcastle is rumored to have given Vlachodimos a five-year contract after he arrived at St. James’ Park, according to a report published by The Athletic on September 13.
Deal for Odysseas Vlachodimos at Newcastle might be looked into
Because of the large sum of money involved, Borson disclosed that the Premier League might look into the trade.
“The warning signs are evident by reading that Athletic section alone.
“I believe the five-year agreement is only intended to allow them to amortize his £20 million cost over the course of the entire five years; at £4 million annually, it’s not a significant quantity of money.
“You would like to extend that contract for perhaps three years, but at that point, the amortisation would rise to about £7 million.
“It makes sense why they might not want to do that.”
