Although Mason Greenwood turned down Juventus’ huge financial offers in the past, it’s now rumoured that Juventus is in the lead to sign him from Manchester United.

Mason Greenwood has been cleared to sign with Juventus, five years after the Italian team allegedly made him an offer that would have changed his life to leave Manchester United.

After an internal inquiry at United concluded that it would be better for all parties if the 22-year-old continued his career elsewhere, he spent the previous season on loan at La Liga team Getafe. Since his arrest in January 2022 for attempted rape, violence, and coercive control, he has not performed for his boyhood club.

The Crown Prosecution Service renounced those charges. After a span of 13 months, Greenwood resumed his professional career in Spain. In 36 games across all competitions, he recorded 10 goals and 6 assists, garnering considerable transfer interest.

This summer, United seemed determined to stand by their decision to allow the forward to go permanently. Furthermore, Juventus is in the lead in the race to sign him, according to Sky Sports in Italy.

According to rumours, Greenwood’s group has signalled to Juventus that the Italian team is his top goal during the transfer window, allowing them to pursue a deal. Therefore, it is assumed that personal terms have already been decided upon.

But the transfer fee—which United is reportedly holding out for about €50 million (£42 million)—might prove to be a sticking point. Juventus plans to make a starting bid of €30 million (£25 million), plus bonuses.

Prior to signing Greenwood, they must also create space for him; either Federico Chiesa or Matias Soule is expected to leave. Both the 21-year-old Argentine Soule and Italy international Chiesa have been linked to Roma. Soule is garnering interest from Premier League teams including Newcastle, Crystal Palace, and Tottenham.

Greenwood has been admired by Juventus when he was just 17 years old in 2019. On the Talk of the Devils podcast, United journalist Andy Mitten stated that they were “prepared to offer his family life-changing amounts of money” to move him to Italy.

Instead, Greenwood chose to sign a new deal at Old Trafford, where he would go on to score 35 goals in 129 appearances for the senior team. His club exploits led to a call-up to the national team.

However, he only has one cap for England since, in September 2020, he and Phil Foden were sent home from Iceland for violating Covid-19 regulations by inviting several ladies to the team hotel. For the last 12 minutes of the 1-0 victory on the road, he was replaced.

In recent months, he has been linked to several clubs across Europe. These include Portuguese team Benfica as well as Spanish powerhouses Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.
