Mason Greenwood’s contract with Manchester United is scheduled to expire in 2025.
Mason Greenwood has reportedly been informed by Manchester United that they will initiate a one-year contract extension, tying him down until 2026. Although it seems like they are prepared to allow a return if no suitors are willing to match Greenwood’s valuation, the Red Devils are reportedly hoping to cash in on him this summer.
In their first transfer window as the owners of Old Trafford’s football operations, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS will decide on a number of significant matters.
All senior players, with the exception of Andre Onana, Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho, and Rasmus Hojlund, are reportedly targets for United.
Amidst the hustle to raise money to lift the club’s Financial Fair Play restrictions, Greenwood is one of the prominent names in the shop window.
This season, the 22-year-old forward has made an impact at Getafe on loan after spending 18 months away from football. In 31 games, he has scored 10 goals and provided six assists for the La Liga team.
ESPN reports that United will not take a lowball offer for Greenwood this summer and will instead demand between £30 million and £40 million.
The M16 powerhouses are rumored to have the authority to order the academy grads to rejoin the team if they are dissatisfied with the offers given the intense interest from England, Italy, and Spain.
In order to improve their negotiating position in the upcoming months, they are also rumored to be prepared to eliminate the possibility of losing Greenwood for free the following summer.
According to HITC, United has informed their former No. 11 that they will extend his contract with them until June 2026, an additional year.
Given that other players are obviously not yet receiving the same treatment, it raises the likelihood that Greenwood will stay put if United’s asking price is not satisfied.
Though they are not in negotiations for new contracts, Christian Eriksen, Hannibal Mejbri, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Victor Lindelof have contracts expiring in the summer.
Although they have the option of a one-year extension, Harry Maguire, Scott McTominay, Donny van de Beek, Facundo Pellistri, and Amad Diallo are also scheduled for release on the same day.
As a result, all nine players will be free agents this summer, though it wouldn’t be shocking if Maguire, McTominay, and Amad’s contract extensions are also activated.
There would be controversy over Greenwood’s return. United made a last-minute change of heart due to the criticism it received for former CEO Richard Arnold’s alleged unsuccessful attempt to reintegrate him last year.
However, by delaying his signature until 2026, United would still be able to collect a transfer fee one year prior to his expiration, and another loan during that term cannot be completely ruled out.
