During his time at Inter Miami, Lionel Messi has received one criticism from former USA international defender Alexi Lalas.

The World Cup winner for Argentina moved to the Herons last summer in a deal that has since changed MLS and raised the bar for American soccer.

In fact, Messi and Inter Miami are drawing in new fans to the sport and have emerged as the hottest ticket in town.

Currently leading the Supporters’ Shield standings, Miami is largely due to Messi’s incredible play following his month-long absence due to a hamstring injury sustained in March.

Lalas has, however, voiced criticism towards the Barcelona legend and his current club in spite of all the good that he has done.

Speaking on the State of the Union podcast, Lalas expressed the opinion that fans and the league are exaggerating Messi’s goals for Inter Miami, even though he believes the attacker’s amazing consistency is making the Herons a team that fans should not miss.

“This was such an interesting game because the goals that we have now started to associate him with MLS—we’ve been doing it for years with Barcelona and Argentina—we’re associating with these magical moments,” Lalas remarked. “He is incredible.”

And yet, none of these objectives was achieved. If it hadn’t been Messi, we would have said something like, “Yeah, okay, whatever, he just scored a penalty and then finished off a broken play.” But what makes this team in pink so amazing is that Messi is doing this consistently, making them must-watch TV every time they play.

“And they are delivering the majority of the time. Furthermore, Messi is currently playing at a blistering pace; if he maintains this level of play, we will witness a historic display.
