Chelsea make U-turn as Enzo Maresca demands sale of failed Pochettino signing

Chelsea is getting a head start on the summer transfer window and intends to offload players who aren’t in Enzo Maresca’s plans as soon as possible.

According to TEAMtalk sources, Maresca wants his 2024–25 squad to be finalized before the start of the preseason. The Blues’ sporting directors are reportedly working nonstop to make this happen.

In the upcoming weeks, some Chelsea players may have to be forced out of the team as the coach is eager to bring in several new players.

Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez is one of those who has been informed that he is available for transfer, sources have told TEAMtalk.

The former Brighton keeper will be let go to create space in the squad and aid in the financing of a deal, as the Blues’ top priority this summer will be to acquire a new goalkeeper.

The 26-year-old Sanchez was signed by Chelsea for £25 million (plus add-ons) last summer, and people close to the team have repeatedly expressed their belief that he has what it takes to be among the best keepers in Europe.

They have since changed their minds, though, after Maresca told the club’s board that he needs a keeper who is far more adept at handling the ball with his feet.

The goalkeeper in Maresca’s system must be extremely skilled with the ball and able to withstand pressure from opponents trying to close him down.

This has forced Chelsea to step up their hunt for a new goalkeeper, and they are now evaluating several possibilities.

Chelsea compiles a shortlist of possible Sanchez substitutes.
TEAMtalk has learned that Filip Jorgenson, who had a strong 2023–24 season at Villarreal and “ticks all the boxes recruiters are looking for,” is highly sought after by Chelsea.

As far as we know, the Blues and the La Liga team have had preliminary discussions to discuss the terms of a potential deal. Jorgenson’s contract contains a £34 million release clause, and several teams are vying for his services.

Giorgi Mamardashvili, the goalkeeper for Valencia, is another goalkeeper Chelsea has been following for a while.

Chelsea and his group have been in contact regarding a possible move. Some at the club believe the Georgian international is the better option out of the two and that he would cost about the same as Jorgensen.

Sanchez will be fired from the team by whoever is ultimately selected to start as the team’s new number one in the upcoming campaign.

According to sources close to TEAMtalk, Sanchez is drawing a lot of interest from both the Premier League and his native Spain.
