Ruben Amorim has issued an ultimatum to Harry Maguire as Manchester United prepares to extend the £80 million disappointment’s contract, despite his imminent departure under Erik ten Hag.
Manchester United players Harry Maguire and Amad Diallo are nearing the finalization of new contracts.
United have consented to activate the 12-month extension stipulated in Maguire’s existing contract. Diallo, 22, is nearing an agreement on a new deal, as reported by Daily Star Sport, to acknowledge his recent advancements with United.
England defender Maguire is set to become a free agent in June and is permitted to negotiate with other teams. However, United manager Ruben Amorim desires for the 31-year-old to stay at Old Trafford.
The news significantly benefits Maguire, considering the difficulties he faced under former manager Erik ten Hag. Maguire was removed from the captaincy and subsequently excluded from the team at different points throughout Ten Hag’s tenure.
However, Amorim appreciates the center back and desires for him to regain a leadership role within the club. He stated: “Amad is close to finalizing a new agreement, whereas Harry Maguire will activate our option.”
I conversed with him this morning and emphasized the necessity for him to enhance his performance on the field, as we rely on him significantly. He must also enhance his leadership skills; we are all aware of the circumstances he faced here, but we are pleased to exercise the choice.
The Star claimed in October that United were open to offers for Harry Maguire this month, commencing at £10 million, since he was considered redundant by Ten Hag.
In 2023, he was on the verge of departing the club for £30 million; however, a potential transfer to West Ham fell through, and Maguire subsequently received a reprieve from Ten Hag before being beset by injury issues.
United acquired Maguire from Leicester City in July 2019 for a world record sum of £80 million, surpassing the prior mark of £75 million established by Liverpool for Virgil van Dijk.
He has polarized opinions both domestically and internationally.
