On Saturday at Wimbledon, Pep Guardiola’s name was mockingly jeered as he entered his seat.

As Guardiola enjoyed his penultimate weekend of summer before Manchester City returns for pre-season play the following week, he was among a number of famous athletes seeing Centre Court from the Royal Box.

And as per BBC Sport, there were a “few boos” from the crowd on Centre Court prior to the match between British player Cameron Norrie and German player Alexander Zverev, as Guardiola took his seat and City’s four Premier League titles with Manchester City were declared. There were several cheers as well in a friendly setting.

Along with Paralympic athletes Hannah Cockroft and Kadeena Cox, a number of Olympic legends were present in the royal box, including Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill, Sir Chris Hoy, Sir Jason Kenney, Dame Laura Kenny, Sir Ben Ainslie, Adam Peaty, Jayne Torvill, and Christopher Dean. Lawrence Dallaglio and Sir Gareth Edwards of the Rugby Union took their seats in a star-studded group with a sporting theme.

Guardiola has frequently talked about how much he loves tennis, comparing the last three points needed to win a championship to the hardest point to win at Wimbledon. He has frequently likened City’s matches against Liverpool to the rivalry between Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic—each player challenging the other to be the best.

This year, he talked about how Federer and Nadal were his heroes, stating, “Their work ethic is the one characteristic that sets them apart.” People tend to think that talent and skill are the reasons for success in any sport. However, what sets [them] apart is that they put in more effort and have more preparation than the others. They are superior.

“They never seem to be satisfied, and they handle setbacks and losses like it’s just part of life. In sports, they know how to win, and when they play poorly or are anxious, they know how to bounce back quickly.”
