Birmingham City ready to cancel loan contract; Charlton, Leicester, and Norwich City could look to rescue 24-year-old

Eiran Cashin looks ready to return to Brighton & Hove Albion in the January transfer window, after his loan at Birmingham City failed to work out.

The Blues are aiming for a second consecutive promotion to the Premier League after being absent since 2011, but their success has been mixed, with home results faring better than away.

Davies will need to correct that as the season progresses if the Blues are to have a chance of making the play-offs in May, and he will be looking to the January window to tweak his current roster, with Brighton loanee Cashin looking increasingly likely to leave the club this winter due to a lack of game time.

Christoph Klarer has forged a good defensive partnership with Phil Neumann, leaving Cashin and teammate Jack Robinson out in the cold, with the Irishman expected to return to the Seagulls early.

Football League World has looked at three clubs who may be interested in bringing the former Derby County star to their club. He joined for Brighton from the Rams for about £9 million in January 2025.

3Charlton Athletic

Charlton Athletic started the 2025/26 EFL Championship season well, showing to be a difficult opponent to break down after being promoted from League One last season under Nathan Jones.

However, the Addicks have fallen down the second tier standings due to a terrible run of form, with the once-solid defence now looking shaky at best.

Charlton were busy bringing in new players over the summer, with Charlie Kelman, Sonny Carey, Thomas Kaminski, Reece Burke, Joe Rankin-Costello, and James Bree all joining on loan, with Jones largely ignoring the loan market.

If his team wants to avoid relegation this season and climb back up the league, the Welsh manager may be obliged to turn to the loan market this winter, with Cashin surfacing as a possible alternative.

Jones is versatile in his team’s shape, but has mainly preferred to utilize a three-man defence, with Cashin more than capable of filling in at left centre-back if necessary, and might prove to be a wise signing for the London club.

2Leicester City

Leicester City spent no money on transfers this summer, instead depending on loan agreements and free signings, with only 40-year-old goalkeeper Asmir Begovic joining permanently.

The Foxes have been plagued by off-field financial troubles, culminating in an impending point deduction and jeopardizing their hopes of returning to the top division right away.

Head coach Marti Cifuentes has come under fire in recent weeks, and the jury is still out on the Spanish coach, who is struggling to get the most out of his players right now.

Wout Faes has long been linked with a move away from the club, with Cifuentes recently opting for a defensive duo of Jannik Vestergaard and Ben Nelson, while Caleb Okoli and Harry Souttar are all injured.

If the Foxes make any changes this January, they will most likely rely on loans and free transfers, with Cashin falling squarely into that category, and he could prove to be a wise addition to the King Power Stadium.

1Norwich City

Norwich City has had a forgettable season so far.

The Canaries are now in the Championship relegation zone, with the Norfolk club in danger of dropping to League One this season.

Belgian head coach Philippe Clement has been tasked with keeping their heads above water this season, having replaced the departing Liam Manning, but the former Monaco and Rangers manager has not been given a nice hand.

Norwich have been decimated by injuries this season, prompting Clement to play some of his players out of position and reintroducing Tony Springett, who made his first Norwich appearance in over three years.

Norwich director Richard Ressler has stated that finances will be made available to Clement in January as he seeks to turn the club’s fortunes around. He may target someone like Cashin, who can play both centre-back and left-back if necessary.

Jakov Medic, Shane Duffy, and Jose Cordoba have all been out for various reasons this season, so Cashin’s acquisition should be beneficial.
