Manchester United might be thinking about making a move for FC Porto striker Samu Omorodion Aghehowa. According to Chris Wheeler of The Daily Mail, club scouts are said to have seen the talented forward play.
The 20-year-old forward is one of the best in Europe right now, and he’s had a great start to life at the Estadio do Dragao since moving there from Atletico Madrid last summer. He has scored 18 goals in 21 games across all categories. On October 3, he scored both goals in a 3-3 UEFA Europa League draw with United and was named the game’s best player.
Someone once said that Aghehowa was “absolutely rapid.” On December 28, Aghehowa scored twice in a 4-0 win for Vitor Bruno’s team in Liga Portugal against Boavista. Wheeler says that the Red Devils’ spy team may have looked at the game to see who had the best attacking skills.
With Aghehowa in good shape, Manchester United could improve their attack.
Last summer, the Porto star almost joined Chelsea.
Aghehowa almost moved to the Premier League last summer, when Chelsea tried to sign the young star from Atletico Madrid. The Blues agreed to pay £35 million for the Spanish power forward, but personal problems caused the deal to fall through, according to The Athletic.
Instead, the one-cap Spain international moved to Porto for a bargain £12.7 million, though his old team has a 50% sell-on option. There is also a release clause in his contract for £83 million, and it seems likely that his new club would not be willing to discuss a lower fee.
United definitely needs more attackers because Rasmus Hojlund (two goals in 14 league games) and Joshua Zirkzee (3 goals in 19 league games) are still having trouble scoring goals up front. The second player may not be able to stay with the Red Devils after being taken off in the first half of their 2-0 loss to Newcastle United at home on December 30.
United’s head coach, Ruben Amorim, will know Aghehowa from when he was at Sporting CP earlier this season. Once he got there, the Spanish forward lit up Liga Portugal right away and was in a close race with Viktor Gyokeres, Amorim’s old striker, for the Primer Liga Golden Boot. He has scored 13 goals in the league so far.
The Red Devils aren’t just working to improve their attack because they’ve had problems at left back for a long time at Old Trafford. Francisco Moura of Porto is also said to be a target, but he didn’t play against Boavista. Rodrigo Mora, a 17-year-old Portuguese winger, and Nico Gonzalez, who has been called “the next Sergio Busquets,” were two other Dragons who stood out in their easy home win.
