After the Red Devils’ Europa League final loss to Tottenham on Wednesday night, Athletic Bilbao’s tweet directed at Manchester United went viral. United’s second journey to San Mames this season ended in agony as their aspirations of winning any hardware in the 2024–25 season came to a whimpering end. However, in their last trip, they defeated the Basque team 7–1 overall.
Spurs won 1-0 thanks to a goal by Brennan Johnson in the first half. As a result, for the first time since the 2014–15 season, United will not play in Europe next season. Although the long-term effects of the loss are still being felt, it is obvious that their path to salvation became much more difficult.
Their final attempt to rescue a miserable Premier League season that saw them record their lowest points total, fewest wins, and most losses in the modern period was the Europa League final. To make matters worse, just after formally complaining to UEFA about United, their opponents in the Europa League semi-final, Athletic Bilbao, have now made a light-hearted jab at their demise.
Athletic Bilbao’s Tweet Takes Aim At Man United
The Spanish outfit were quick to twist the knife on Wednesday night
Many of the Spanish supporters who came to Old Trafford for the second leg earlier this month were sitting in the home end, according to the La Liga team’s protest to UEFA against the club.
It’s safe to say Athletic had the last laugh when Man United collapsed on their own turf last night, as their social media account made evident by posting (see the post below), even though the accusations eventually resulted in no further action.
“Go, Man Utd. We will definitely see you again at this point in a competition in the future.
Of course, one could read the caption as an example of true sportsmanship. However, considering the three accompanying photographs, that is more than a reach. While the others depict Leny Yoro with his hands on his head in desperation, one depicts Cristian Romero kissing the head of a distraught Alejandro Garnacho. When taken as a whole, the post seems less like a friendly gesture and more like a barb at the Red Devils.
The tone appeared to be sarcastic, as many commenters also noted. It might take a while for United to return to European play given their current financial difficulties and 16th-place finish in the Premier League. The team is currently facing yet another summer reconstruction, as they appear to do every 12 months.
