Following Jadon Sancho’s debut in Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup Third Round matchup against Premier League rivals Brentford, Aston Villa supporters have voiced their strong opinions. When Marcus Rashford temporarily joined Villa in January of last season, he made a short-term impact that the on-loan Manchester United outcast hopes to duplicate.
Sancho, who is only 25 years old, is still most known for his impressive tenure at Borussia Dortmund, where he made 158 appearances and contributed 53 goals and 67 assists. However, like many other talented players who have recently joined the 20-time English winners, his stay at Old Trafford came to a terrible standstill. In 83 games, he only managed 12 goals and six assists, despite being valued at £73 million.
His future was uncertain due to public arguments with Erik ten Hag and then Ruben Amorim, but Sancho is now hoping that a good spell in the Midlands could persuade a long-term buyer to make a move next summer. He has been entrusted with bringing goals and inventiveness to Unai Emery’s team at Villa Park, who have failed to score in their first four league games of the 2025–26 season despite having Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins.
The Performance of Jadon Sancho in His Aston Villa Debut

The debut was a cruel disappointment for those who were thinking Sancho would show off a reinvigorated version of himself at the Gtech Community Stadium. He barely mustered one shot in his 73-minute game, missing his only dribbling effort and failing to attempt a single cross. He also clipped the woodwork when he should have done better.
In addition, he lost all three of his ground duels, gave up possession nine times, and made no defensive contributions at all.
Sancho’s performance reflected the form of a player who hasn’t been able to secure a regular starting position anywhere in Europe for the previous three years. He was flat, tepid, and appeared to be out of ideas from the first whistle.
Fans Give Sancho a Verdict

It’s easy to say that Sancho’s contributions—or lack thereof—left a fan base that has been denied goals, although one that was eventually awarded by former Liverpool player Harvey Elliott. One user on X commented, “Sancho with the whole goal go aim at smashes the post!” in response to the Englishman’s lost chance. A second was added elsewhere:
“Donyell Malen, Jadon Sancho, and Evann Guessand have all fallen short tonight. All of them are more than competent. This is their opportunity to demonstrate their abilities. Strange.
“Sancho is rancid” was added by a third user, and “Sancho has forgotten to play football…” was next. In the meantime, a fifth made Emery the target of criticism by drawing the conclusion that “If Emery thinks he can run Sancho and Digne on the left-hand side, that is, yet again, another sackable offence.”
