AS Roma Asked Fan to Recreate Goal After he Said: ‘I Could Have Scored That’

In brief
The club gave a Roma supporter the opportunity to prove that he could replicate a player’s goal, but he failed miserably.
Marco Nicolai made three attempts, but missed the others and slipped hilariously in one.
After the event, Marco acknowledged that he would never again make such statements.
If you haven’t at some point asserted that you could have scored the same goal as a professional in a competitive game, you’re not a true football fan. The expression “Even I could have scored that” is sometimes used when a player from the stands or the comfort of an armchair converts a seemingly simple opportunity.

Football fans make that assertion with the knowledge that they will never have to verify its veracity. However, AS Roma made the decision to challenge one of its supporters in 2019.

Marco, a Roma supporter, attempts to recreate Cengiz Under’s goal against Parma.
The supporter’s situation did not turn out nicely.

Marco Nicolai, the fan, commented that he could have scored one of the goals in a Cengiz Under highlight film that was uploaded to Roma’s official Facebook page. Marco was given three chances to replicate Under’s finish against Parma when Roma requested him to come to the Stadio Olimpico and show his mettle.

Many supporters watched from inside the stadium, and unfortunately for the young player, things didn’t exactly go his way. Take a look at what transpired below.

Marco, you’re not lucky. Sadly, the little Roma supporter was unable to duplicate Under’s goal in each of his three attempts. On his first attempt, Marco slipped and fell very comically, and on his second attempt, he scuffed the ball and missed the net. On his third try, he came the closest, but his shot missed the goal by a slim margin.

“You’ll never write that again?” Later, when queried on the sidelines, Marco said, “I don’t think so, no!”

The Career of Cengiz Under in Football
Now in the MLS is the Turkish winger.

In 2017, Under joined with Roma after the club paid €13.4 million to İstanbul Başakşehir for his services. Over the following three seasons, the Turkish winger made 88 appearances and scored 17 goals.

However, he was sent out on loan to Leicester City for the 2019–20 season after being judged surplus to requirements at the beginning of the season. After spending the next season with Marseille, the French team chose to exercise their option to purchase him and paid €9 million to sign him.

With a remarkable 16 goals in 51 games for his nation, the winger was once again on the move in 2023 when he came home and signed with Fenerbahçe. He battled for playing time to begin the 2024–25 season after a strong first season back in Turkey, and when the January transfer window opened, he was loaned to Los Angeles FC of Major League Soccer.
