A deal has been reached in principle for Manchester United to hire Ruben Amorim as their new manager.
Following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal on Monday, the Reds are seeking to choose their first permanent manager under Ineos. The co-owners of United, who currently oversee football operations at Old Trafford, have had an unlucky start.
After remaining with Ten Hag after United’s worst-ever eight-place finish in the top division since 1990, Ineos has come under fire in some quarters. However, is it possible that they are now taking a bold step that gives hope that the music at Old Trafford may change?
Without a doubt, Amorim would be dangerous. The 39-year-old has never held a managerial position outside of Portugal, a domestic league that is inferior in quality to the Premier League, La Liga, and Bundesliga.
A youthful manager led the team to 85 points and only lost once during the season, making it a historic triumph. It ended an almost two-decade-long curse, and three years later, it won another league championship.
Ending Sporting’s protracted wait for a league title would undoubtedly convince the club’s executives that he can pull off the same feat in Manchester, even if it will be much harder to recreate the same success at United.
Even more notably, United’s best manager ever carried out this action. After years of struggle, Ferguson finally ended a 26-year drought for a top-flight title in the first Premier League season of 1992–93 after joining from Aberdeen.
