Arsenal ‘target two former stars’ in search for new sporting director to replace Edu

Arsenal has initiated the process of seeking a new sporting director in response to the announcement that Edu would be departing the club. Academy manager Per Mertesacker is among the candidates on their shortlist.

Two former players are being considered by Arsenal as their next sporting director, with Per Mertesacker being one of them.

Earlier this week, the Gunners received the unexpected news that Edu would be resigning from his position. The Brazilian has served as the club’s sporting director for several years, collaborating with Mikel Arteta to propel the team back into contention for silverware.

In the transfer market, Edu has also been astute, directing the club’s record-breaking acquisition of Declan Rice. The club is currently in the process of recruiting his successor, who is expected to assume the role of managing Evangelos Marinakis’ portfolio of clubs, which includes Nottingham Forest.

According to Foot Mercato, a French publication, two former players have been identified as potential candidates for the position. The club’s academy manager, Mertesacker, is one of them. The current sporting director of Sparta Prague is the Czech Tomas Rosicky.

Arsenal officials are currently in the process of identifying a permanent successor to Edu, and in the interim, Jason Ayto has assumed the role. The Emirates are believed to be amenable to exploring a variety of options in their pursuit of a new sporting director and are not adamant about hiring a former player.

Josh Kroenke, the co-chairman, does not seem to be concerned about Edu’s departure, expressing gratitude for his contributions. He is emphatic that the club will continue to evolve and that personnel changes are unavoidable. Kroenke is confident that their next move will underscore their aspiration to win silverware.

He stated, “We acknowledge Edu’s decision and express our gratitude for his significant contributions and unwavering commitment to the club’s advancement.” He is wished well by all members of the club. We are all incredibly enamoured of him and the positive energy he radiates towards everyone and everything.

“Our club is characterised by change and evolution.” We continue to concentrate on our strategy and the acquisition of significant mementos. This ongoing aspiration will be reflected in our succession plan.

When he broke his seclusion, the Brazilian underscored his desire to pursue a new venture. “It is now time to embark on a new challenge.” Arsenal will forever hold a special place in my heart. “I extend my best wishes to the club and its supporters.”
