When their contracts expire at the end of June, Arsenal has decided to release 19 players, with Mikel Arteta moving on to some first-team stars.

At the end of June, Arsenal will release 19 players, including Mohamed Elneny and Cedric Soares.

On June 30, the veteran Portuguese full-back and Egyptian midfielder will leave the Gunners and become a free agent, allowing him to sign with any team. After losing to Manchester City in the Premier League once more, manager Mikel Arteta and sporting director Edu are eager to make changes to the team and are acting accordingly.

Elneny is one of the team’s longest-serving members, having joined Arsenal from Basel in 2016. He has made 161 appearances across all competitions for the team. However, in all competitions this season, the 31-year-old saw only six games; Declan Rice and Thomas Partey were preferred in holding midfield.

After moving to North London from Southampton in 2020, Soares has made 64 appearances for the team. Additionally, he has had a terrible time getting into the game—he has only appeared six times this season—and is leaving to pursue better opportunities elsewhere.

Another well-known player who hasn’t received a new contract offer is Arthur Okonkwo. This season, while on loan at Wrexham, the 22-year-old goalie made an impression. Last month, he discussed his future plans with Mirror Football.

“I’ve been at Arsenal for 15 years now, and it’s been an amazing journey. I joined at the age of eight, and I’ve worked with amazing people in both the academy and the first team,” he said.

After spending so many wonderful years at Arsenal, it’s bittersweet to have to start a new chapter. However, in the last two years, I’ve needed to keep playing and continue on my journey. I still have a lot of ambition to compete internationally. I still have the option to play for Nigeria or England; I haven’t decided yet.

“I believe that, at 22, you are still relatively young for a goalie, and your extensive playing and experience will only be beneficial, as my role is likely much more difficult than most people realize.”

Amario Cozier-Duberry, an attacking midfielder, goalkeeper Karl Hein, and defender Reuell Walters are still in discussions with Arsenal regarding possible contract extensions. Walters was set to depart the Gunners, according to a report from Mirror Football last month, after turning down a new contract offer. Arsenal cannot guarantee that the 19-year-old center back is ready for regular first team football, but he feels ready.
