When Mikel Arteta’s Belgian star was instructed to leave the field during Arsenal’s match against Manchester City, Gary Neville called Leandro Trossard’s second yellow card “stupidity.”
Trossard gave the home team an opportunity to tie the score just as the Gunners, led 2-1 by goals from Gabriel and Riccardo Calafiori, were about to take a commanding halftime lead.
Deep into first-half stoppage time, Trossard had already been given a yellow card and had fouled Bernardo Silva while attempting to head the ball. He then booted the ball away when the whistle blew, earning himself a marching order.
Just weeks after Declan Rice was sent out against Brighton for a similar offense, he left referee Anthony Taylor with no choice but to brandish another yellow as Mikel Arteta covered his face with his jumper in shock.
