Keeper this summer
It’s no secret that Andre Onana has failed to convert his strong Inter performances to Manchester United since his arrival in 2023.
After playing an important role in Inter’s passage to the Champions League final, United pulled off a coup by luring the Cameroon international to Old Trafford.
Following the Dutchman’s outstanding debut season at Old Trafford, then-United head coach Erik ten Hag asked that the club sign Onana.
Ten Hag supervised a third-place finish and an EFL Cup victory, which should have given United the right foundation to carry on and challenge Manchester City for the title.
David De Gea was essential in United’s successful first season under Ten Hag, but the club was pleased to see him leave in 2023.
De Gea returned to Old Trafford over the weekend.
After a year away from football, De Gea returned to Fiorentina last season and shone among the Italian giants.
De Gea returned to Old Trafford over the weekend as United and Fiorentina drew 1-1 in a pre-season match that the Premier League side eventually won on penalties.
With Onana’s two seasons at United plagued with high-profile mistakes, the Cameroonian has been warned his “time is up” at the club.

United have been connected with a new custodian this summer, particularly Gianluigi Donnarumma, who was left out of PSG’s Super Cup squad, while Emiliano Martinez has also been linked with a move to the club.
Chelsea and Manchester City have also been linked with the Italy captain, but United have been ordered to return for a former custodian as they attempt to improve in a difficult position.
Former Premier League striker Matt Jansen, speaking with BettingLounge.co.uk, summed up the sentiment among supporters and their rising frustration with Onana.
United advised to replace their custodian.
“They [United] will not prosper unless they change their custodian, in my opinion. They were seeking to sign Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa, believing he would be an improvement. Honestly, you could name half a dozen keepers who would outperform Onana,” Jansen stated in a harsh appraisal of United’s current number one.
“He has not performed well. Perhaps David de Gea could return and still do his job. But it’s evident that they need to make a change at custodian; Onana hasn’t worked out, and his contract is up. They should never have let De Gea leave. That was an unusual decision, and they have paid the price for it.”
Onana missed United’s pre-season tour of the United States due to a hamstring injury, but he is likely to be available for their Premier League opener against Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday (August 17th).
